GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Team or Clinic Manager, the Speech/Language Pathologist is responsible for direct patient care and related documentation and care of patient records.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Team or Clinic Manager, the Speech/Language Pathologist is responsible for direct patient care and related documentation and care of patient records.

The Speech/Language Pathologist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit—pediatric through geriatric. The Speech/Language Pathologist must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs; and to provide the care needed as described in the Outpatient and Speech Pathology & Audiology’s policies and procedures.

EDUCATION:

Completion of a Master's degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited program required.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of experience in Speech Pathology services preferred.

SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Licensed as a Speech Pathologist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Must be cleared by PA State Police criminal history check, Cogent and PA Department of Public Welfare Child Abuse Central Register (Childline).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills required for effective interaction with management, staff, patients, and visitors.

Valid PA driver's license required for travel.

CPR certification is required and must be maintained.

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care appropriate to the age specific need and culture of the patient served.

Must be a fluent speaker of the English language and be able to communicate in an effective manner with staff, patients, families, or significant others, management, and other professionals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position involves bending, reaching, and stooping (occasionally in strained position) throughout shift.

Position involves ambulating when performing tests and therapy; reaching for, handling, and manipulating equipment controls and work aids; feeling patient's lips, mouth, jaw and throat.

Verbal skills are required to convey information and give instruction.

Acute hearing for determining differentiation in speech impairments and progress of patients under treatment is required.

Visual acuity is required for reading data and equipment controls and to observe mouth and lips in formation of sounds.

Ability to transport self throughout facility is required.

Must be able to travel as required.

ACCIDENT OR HEALTH HAZARDS:

Occasional exposure to X-ray radiation while performing video fluoroscopic swallowing studies

Occasional exposure to blood and body substances.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in a well-lit office environment or treatment space.

  • Evaluates assigned patients completing all quality indicators. Develops and implements therapy programs upon referral from a prescribed physician/ LIP as per Outpatient departmental policies and procedures. (E)
  • Implements treatment for patients within the framework of the prescription/ plan of care. Modifies treatment as appropriate. Provides patient/family education and home programs as necessary. (E)
  • Documents patient status and treatments according to Outpatient and Therapy policies and procedures. (E)
  • Delegates appropriate duties and provides supervision. Communicates necessary information to teammate for coverage of patients in his/her absence. Assists in absorbing patient load and duties of other therapists as necessary. (E)
  • Maintains productivity standard according to the “Outpatient Clinical Work Performance” Policy. (E)
  • Follows all corporate, hospital and Outpatient Therapy policies including Complaint and Grievance Process and Variance Reporting (E)
  • Maintains corporate, divisional and department competencies and annual training. (E)
  • Promotes and develops clinical expertise in self .(E)
  • Participates in the student program as a clinical instructor according to clinical education policies and procedures. (NE)
  • Provides educational programs to community/ staff. (NE)
