Job summary

CommonSpirit Health through Mercy Hospitals in Bakersfield seeks a Speech Therapist to evaluate and manage patients with speech, language, and cognitive disorders. You will develop individualized treatment plans, implement interventions, and monitor progress to improve communication and quality of life.

You will document encounters, educate families, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, maintaining safe, evidence-based care and advocacy for patients throughout the treatment process.

Qualifications

  • One year of clinical experience with direct patient contact.
  • Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in California.
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) from American Heart Association.
  • Driver's license and auto insurance in California.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Speech Therapist, you will provide essential evaluation and therapeutic management for patients with speech, language, and/or cognitive disorders, improving communication, cognitive function, and quality of life.

Every day you will conduct comprehensive assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, implement interventions, and monitor progress. You'll educate patients/families on strategies and goals, document encounters, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

To be successful, you will demonstrate strong clinical evaluation and therapeutic management skills. Excellent communication for patient/family rapport and team collaboration, a commitment to evidence-based practice, and patient advocacy are essential.

  • Perform patient assessment, including giving or receiving report, obtaining the patient history, conducting a physical assessment, establishing priorities for care. Assess patient's learning needs, readiness for discharge and ability to manage illness after discharge.
  • Completes documentation timely and submits within 24 hours of visit. Contacts Supervisor and updates him/her on patient's progress. Submits schedule weekly and notifies Scheduler of changes as they occur.
  • Maintains productivity standards as set by the department.
  • Receive and administer physician orders in a safe and timely manner. Uses hospital/agency approved process for telephone and / or verbal orders.
  • Develop/implement care plan and/or discharge plan for each patient, including interpreting care paths, physician orders, progress notes. Provide direct patient care, as required. Perform Point of Care Testing where applicable. Contact physician with any problems or concerns, as necessary. Report changes in patient's condition to physician. Maintain safe, clean and therapeutic environment for patients.
  • Prepare or assign all required documentation to meet legal requirements and hospital policies and procedures. Maintain appropriate communication with other staff members, patient and family members, including answering questions, discussing patient care and providing emotional support to patients and family.
