The Garfield Board of Education is seeking a Speech Language Therapist for an anticipated opening in September 2025. This position involves leading the speech therapy program for students with disabilities and ensuring compliance with New Jersey regulations.

As a Speech Language Therapist, you will develop and implement individualized educational programs (IEPs) and deliver treatment sessions. Preferred candidates will have a Master's Degree in a related field and relevant experience in educational settings.

Qualifications

• Valid New Jersey Educational Services Certificate and Speech-Language Specialist Endorsement are required.
• Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field is preferred.
• Successful prior experience working as a Speech Therapist, preferably in an educational or pediatric setting.

Job description

Speech Language Therapist (Anticipated Opening for September 2025)

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Director of Pupil Services, to lead the process in the development, implementation, and coordination of the school district's speech therapy program for students with disabilities or physical/mental impairments by developing and following individualized treatment plan that addresses specific functional needs. Tenure Track Position.

Essential Functions

• Makes assessments, analyses and classifications of students' communication competencies and characteristics.
• Plans, prepares and delivers treatment programs for children with speech and language deficiencies. Provides diagnostic evaluations of pupils referred to the child study team for communication disorders and participates in team conferences related to those pupils.
• Develops and implements an individualized educational program (IEP) in conjunction with parents and teachers for pupils who are eligible for speech correction and identifies pupils in need of related services.
• Provides individual and small group intervention sessions with students who have been classified and conducts classes in language stimulation.
• Maintains close liaison with the child study team and serves as a case manager as assigned.
• Keeps those records necessary for each child and completes all required local, state and federal reports. Participates in the development and improvement of opportunities for disabled/exceptional students by providing individual or group in service experiences for staff and parents.
• Conducts ongoing evaluation of all children in the program to determine appropriateness of their program.
• Acts as educational consultant to classroom teachers, guidance counselors and administrators as required.
• Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
• Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
• Maintains professional competence through in service education and other professional growth activities.
• Observes children identified as needing service in classroom settings on an ongoing basis.
• Attends and participates in meetings as deemed necessary and consistent with the needs of the district.
• Performs all duties required by administrative code, state and federal laws, and board policy.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties

• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Pupil Services and other administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
