Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia is seeking a Speech Therapist to provide licensure-compliant therapy services and collaborate with the care team. The role includes evaluating patients, planning and delivering treatment, and documenting care for regulatory adherence.

Minimum education is a Master\'s in Speech-Language Pathology with Virginia licensure or ASHA certification; supervision of therapists and trainees may be involved as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide therapy services consistent with licensure to clients, including evaluation of patient and establishing plan of care.
  • Implement treatment and educate patient and/or caregiver; document care.
  • Supervise therapy assistants, technicians, students, and volunteers as applicable.
  • Communicate with other health care providers regarding client care and treatment plans.
  • Complete patient documentation timely to meet regulatory requirements and assist with insurance authorizations.

JOB SUMMARY

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The employee may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.Responsible for providing therapy services consistent with licensure to clients including evaluation of patient, establishing plan of care, implementing treatment, directing, and educating patient and/or caregiver and documentation of the above.Supervise therapy assistants, technicians, students, and volunteers as applicable.Communicate with other health care providers regarding client care and treatment plansProvide training and education for hospital staff as requested.Complete patient documentation in a timely manner to meet regulatory and organizational requirements.Attend continuing education programs and present findings to appropriate staff as applicable.Review and complete all insurance authorization requirements for patients in a timely manner.Assist with performance improvement for rehab department and hospital.Understand use and precautions of any treatments and equipment used.Positively contributes to the departmental financial performance/productivity.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master's Degree (MS or M. Ed) from an accredited SLP program.

Licensure: Virginia State Speech Pathology License or Compact Privilege required. Current ASHA certification or completion of ASHA certification within 15 months of hire..

Competencies
  • Patient Care: Delivers care that is consistent with the team member's discipline in accordance with the specific therapy practice act, guidelines, and code of ethics of the respective organization, i.e., APTA, ASHA, AOTA.
    • Completes patient evaluations and treatments independently while maintaining patient safety.
    • Appropriately seeks guidance and assistance when necessary.
    • Independently establishes/implements treatment goals and plans based on patient input and evaluation and assessment results.
    • Reassesses outcomes and modifies goals and plans to meet changing needs of the patient.
    • Schedules patient activities according to patient individual needs.
  • Technical Competency: : Demonstrates technical competencies and job knowledge as it pertains to rehabilitative care.
    • Acquires and maintains knowledge of clinical therapy practice by identifying continuing education needs and participating in educational opportunities.
    • Provides orientation and guidance to new rehabilitation staff in work area as requested.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical Demand Code:

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.   • The base compensation for this role is $53.35 hourly.
  • Please note that the pay rate does not include any applicable incentive compensation programs such as shift differentials, clinical ladders, and other incentives that may be available for those in eligible positions.
