Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and diagnose speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders.
  • Provide aural rehabilitation and augmentative/alternative communication support for severe disorders.
  • Train and educate families, caregivers, and other professionals.
  • Carry out and adjust treatment plans; record progress and discharge criteria.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and participate in team meetings.
  • Assist in training and support of team members, volunteers, and students.

Job description

Location: Newport News, Virginia. Salary: $41.00 - $56.38 per hour. Actual pay is determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.

Overview

The Speech Language Pathologist carries out an individualized program for patients with acute and chronic health conditions to maximize their quality of life and achieve functional goals. The therapist also maintains a positive working relationship with other health professionals and ancillary staff.

What You Will Do
  • Responsible for evaluating and diagnosing speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders.
  • Provides aural rehabilitation for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and provides augmentative and alternative communication systems for severe expressive and/or language comprehension disorders such as ASD or progressive neurological disorders.
  • Provides training and education to family/caregivers and other professionals.
  • Carries out treatment plan and modifies it to maximize therapeutic benefit and meet discharge criteria and return to optimal level of care; records patient progress and modifies the plan of care.
  • Builds trusting collaborative relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs; actively participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Assists in training and support of all team members, volunteers, and students.

Education
  • Masters Degree, Speech Language Pathology (Required)
  • Doctoral Degree, Speech Language Pathology (Required)
Experience
  • 1 year Speech Language Pathology (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
  • Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) - The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Upon Hire (Required)
  • Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Upon Hire (Required)
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) - The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Upon Hire (Preferred)
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association / American Red Cross / American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 30 Days (Required)
