Included are developmental speech disorders, language disorders, communication problems due to hearing loss, congenital or acquired neurological disorders, fluency problems, difficulty with social use of language, alternative or augmentative communications systems, rehabilitative needs, monitors patient progress, ensures that recommendations are followed, and maintains clinical records according to established procedures. Essential Functions - Developmental: Understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and/or adult patient in regard to their growth and development process and as pertains to communication and feeding development. - Patient Evaluation/Inpatient Consultation: Evaluates inpatients and/or outpatients referred due to a communication disorder or feeding problem. Provides diagnostic evaluations, diagnostic reevaluations, and treatment. Competencies may include: augmentative systems/AAC, language delays/disorders, developmental and motor speech disorders, cleft palate/VPI, laryngeal voice disorders (including speaking valves), fluency/stuttering, Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS), Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), clinical feeding/swallowing (including but not limited to NICU, CICU, Feeding Team), orofacial/myofunctional disorders, inpatient/outpatient rehab, oropharyngeal prostheses. - Treatment: Provides prelinguistic, feeding/swallowing, speech, language, fluency, resonance, or voice treatment. - Participates in weekend/holiday on-call coverage rotation (Inpatient units only). - Case Management: Maintains caseload of patients adhering to department guidelines. Trains families, hospital staff, and community providers regarding patient needs. Understands the medical and developmental needs of populations served. Attends staffing/ team meetings, rounds, etc. - Documentation: Maintains timely written documentation of evaluation, Plans of Care, treatment, progress and follow-up, adhering to department and hospital guidelines. - Patient/Family Teaching: Counsels and trains parents and nursing staff regarding communication, feeding problems and treatment programs. Provides family with appropriate home programming to facilitate carryover of therapeutic strategies/plans. - Discharge Planning: Plans for discharge from the hospital or from ongoing outpatient therapy into the home, school, or other community providers, and facilitates process; follows patients to ensure continuity of speech/language care. - Accountability/Productivity: Maintains a regular schedule of patients for evaluation and treatment. Maintains productivity to support department goals. - Professional Development/Continuing Education: Maintains continuing education requirements as indicated by ASHA and Wisconsin State Licensure. Participates in training and support of new team members. Supervises and trains graduate students from area colleges and universities. Supports student observations. Provides in-service training to CHW staff and community partners, lectures on topics related to speech and language profession to support department goals. Personal Development/Goals: Recognizes need for improvement in clinical areas and core competencies. Sets and achieves personal goals. Education: - Master's Degree Background in the areas of child development, speech/language development, audiology, speech disorders (functional and organic), language impairments, neuropathology, feeding/swallowing, and anatomy and physiology as acquired through completion of a Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology required - in lieu of a State of Wisconsin license, a temporary license is acceptable for 90 days. Experience: - 2+ years experience preferred in order to gain comprehensive understanding of speech/language techniques and objectives and to gain expertise necessary to analyze and interpret objective and subjective information obtained through the assessment and treatment process. preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of the principles of neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent development as it relates to communication and swallowing disorders including, but not limited to: cleft palate and craniofacial disorders, genetic disorders, medical problems resulting in communication or feeding disorders, feeding and swallowing problems, laryngeal/voice disorders, fluency, language disorders, hearing loss, motor speech disorders, and pre-term infants. - Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients and families and other professionals who function in a team environment. Licenses and Certifications: - BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council required - License Speech/Language Pathologist (154) - State of Wisconsin within 90 Days required - ASHASP-Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology - American Speech-Language-Hearing Association within 1 Year required Patient Care Responsibility - Provides care appropriate to patient population and as described in applicable policies and procedures.
