Job summary

Position Purpose

Serves as a critical member of the school team in supporting the speech/language/communication needs of students. Provides high quality specialized assessment and instruction, implementing Individual Educational Plans (IEP) to students with disabilities in the school setting. Maintains confidentiality and complies with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, guidelines, and procedures as they relate to the special education program throughout the district. Provides protection against discrimination for individuals with disabilities and general education students as part of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process. Ensures vision aligns with the mission, vision, and core beliefs of the Wake County School System (WCPSS) Strategic Plan.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the theory, principles, and methods of speech-language pathology;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and customer service skills;
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team concept;
  • Ability to independently resolve problems;
  • Ability to organize information from multiple sources;
  • Ability to select, learn, and administer appropriate assessment and treatment activities;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, external agencies, and the public.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Master's degree obtained in an approved program in Speech Language Pathology.
Certification and License Requirements
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) or eligibility to complete the Clinical Fellowship Year with ASHA;
  • A license from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology or eligibility to complete the Supervised Experience Year with the NC BOE;
  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license with a good driving record according to the State of NC requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing school based speech/language therapy services;
  • Experience with the IEP process;
  • Experience with ECATs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follows all rules, policies, and procedures of WCPSS, along with state and federal regulations, including IDEA.
  • Conducts screenings and tests, obtains diagnostic information, analyzes information, and makes recommendations regarding programs and services in collaboration with the team.
  • Develops IEPs for each eligible student in collaboration with the teacher, parent, and other pertinent professionals.
  • Plans therapy and uses appropriate diagnostic tools and therapy techniques to support the curriculum.
  • Provides appropriate information on an informal or formal basis regarding speech, language, and hearing programs and services.
  • Maintains records in accordance with established rules, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Provides consultation to parents, teachers, and other appropriate school personnel; seeks the assistance of teachers, parents, and others to meet the communication needs of students.
  • Makes recommendations and referrals for audiological/medical and related services as the needs of the student and or family require.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech-language hearing and education.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automobile equipment.
