Job Description

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. The district includes 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 post‑secondary academies, serving a diverse student population.

The Speech and Language Pathologist – Assistive Technology identifies students with communication disabilities, develops treatment plans, and provides direction to speech‑language pathology assistants. The role involves assessment, intervention, collaboration, and use of assistive technologies to support student success.

Essential Functions

• Assess students' communication skills and document findings to identify disorders, determine eligibility, and develop recommendations.
• Collaborate with educators, therapists, and families to communicate information, resolve issues, and provide services in compliance with guidelines.
• Coordinate meetings and processes for eligible students, including testing, IEPs, parent conferences, and pre‑referral staffing.
• Develop treatment plans, interventions, and educational materials in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Instruct students in the use of appropriate communication technologies such as hearing aids, FM systems, and augmentative devices.
• Provide instruction to support staff on communicative disorders, assistive device usage, and implementation of treatment plans.
• Interpret medical reports and ensure treatment plans are appropriate.
• Maintain files and records to support reference and compliance requirements.
• Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars to gather and convey information.
• Prepare written materials, including reports, Medicaid billings, and required documentation.
• Provide speech and language therapy to students.
• Research resources and methods to support evidence‑based practice.
• Respond to inquiries from parents, teachers, and other stakeholders.
• Transport supplies and equipment to various sites as needed.
• Perform other related duties to support effective functioning of the unit.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Valid Kansas Speech-Language Pathology license.
• Reliable transportation, as the role requires travel to serve student needs.

Maintain communication with school personnel and parents to enhance cooperative action meeting educational needs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in a variety of formats.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and write professional reports, correspondence, and protocols. Adept at presenting information and responding to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, and the public.

Physical Demands

Requires sitting, walking, standing, talking, hearing, occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, and occasional travel to students’ homes. Vision requirements include close, distance, and depth perception.

Work Environment

The environment is typically noisy. The employee is responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well-being.
