Role Overview

The Speech and Language Pathologist assists in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Speech and Language Pathologist must work closely with the staff and administration of the Cooperative and School District.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students.
  • Establishes a positive learning environment and responds to the individual needs of students.
  • Ensures that all activities conform to District and Cooperative guidelines
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the School District, Cooperative and the community.
  • Works effectively with community organizations
  • Appropriately operates all equipment as required
  • Reacts to changes in a professional and productive manner and completes other tasks as assigned
  • Supports the value of an education
  • Supports the philosophy and vision of the School District and the Cooperative
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Assists in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems
  • Monitors student progress and makes informed, timely educational decisions
  • Conducts speech, language and hearing screenings and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for clinical services
  • Participates as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, review and re-evaluation process
  • Participates in the development of student IEPs.
  • Adheres to required program guidelines as defined by the School District of the City of York’s plan for Special Education
  • Consults with teachers, administrators, parents and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available
  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies
  • Refers students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services
  • Cooperates with agencies serving students and families
  • Provides therapy, follow-up and/or consultation based on student’s IEPs.
  • Motivates students through effective communication and evaluative feedback
  • Demonstrates awareness of the needs of students and provides for individual differences
  • Sets high expectations for student achievement and behavior
  • Demonstrates effective and professional interpersonal relationships with others
  • Establishes and maintains a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management
  • Plan and implement transitional programs for students
  • Assists students in developing feelings of self-worth and in making social adjustments that permit them to cope with disabilities
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records and provide timely reports
  • Orders and maintains an adequate inventory of materials and supplies
  • Train staff members as assigned
  • Assists with public awareness activities that lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children
  • Stays abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques in the speech and language pathology profession
  • Ensures that School District policies and that of the Cooperative are observed during all activities
  • Obtains advance approval for all special activities and expenditures
  • Adheres to all District and Cooperative health and safety policies
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education
