Job summary

New Braunfels is seeking a dedicated paraprofessional to support a special education classroom. You will assist with instructional activities, prepare materials, and help maintain an orderly environment.

Under the guidance of a certified teacher, you will support students with disabilities, help manage behavior, assist with transfers, and help with records and reports. The role requires patience, clear communication, and the ability to work with diverse needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Educational Aide Certificate issued by SBEC required.
  • Paraprofessional Assessment Certificate or 2 years of college required.

Responsibilities

  • Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Assist students with physical disabilities, including bathroom needs and transferring to and from wheelchairs.
  • Help manage behavior of students, including crisis situations.
  • Adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs in small groups.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day (lunchroom, bus, playground).
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff development and meetings.
  • Attend training on physical restraint annually.
  • Assist with medical logs as needed.

Job description

Primary Purpose:

Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self‑help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Educational Aide Certificate issued by SBEC

Paraprofessional Assessment Certificate, Associates Degree or two years (48 semester hours) of college

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of general office equipment

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
  1. Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays
  2. Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
  3. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  4. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  5. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Student Management
  1. Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including bathroom needs and transferring to and from wheelchairs.
  2. Help manage behavior of students. This includes interviewing in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  3. Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs while working with individuals or in small groups.
  4. Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  5. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Other
  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  3. Attend training on physical restraint each year.
  4. Assist with medical logs as needed.
