Qualifications

POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR ST. CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM
Board Approval June 2021

TITLE: Special Education (Instructional) Aide

JOB GOALS: To assist the special education teacher in providing behavioral, instructional, and support services for students with disabilities

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal, Special Education Coordinator, special education teacher

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Must hold a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following qualifications:
    1. Successful completion of at least 2 years (48 semester hours) of study at an institution of higher learning OR
    2. An Associate’s Degree documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education OR
    3. Successfully pass the WorkKeys Assessment with a minimum of Level 3 scores on the following tests: Applied Mathematics; Work Place Documents; and Business Writing
  2. Good public relations skills
  3. Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students
  4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  5. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  6. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  7. Ability to lift 50 pounds
  8. Ability to lift/transfer students, ability to restrain students of various ages and sizes (if MCS trained), ability to feed students, and ability or provide physical support when required
  9. Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software to perform job
  10. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists the special education teacher to implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of all
  2. Assists the special education teacher in identifying maintenance
  3. Supervises students as
  4. Assists the special education teacher to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and local
  5. Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans as
  6. Demonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and supports an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and
  7. Demonstrates initiative to improve job performance and in areas of
  8. Reports absences to special education teacher, takes leave, and prepares for substitute in accordance to board policy and
  9. Assists the special education teacher in managing student behavior in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and school
  10. Assists the special education teacher in creating a learning environment that is attractive, safe, and conducive for
  11. Supervises extra-curricular activities as
  12. Supervises morning, afternoon, detention, etc. as
  13. Serve as bus aides in emergency situations to maintain safety of students during transportation. This will include riding the bus when a bus aide is not
  14. Works independently and follows
  15. Participates in Managing Crisis Safely Training (MCS) and maintains certification
  16. Performs duties in a courteous and professional
  17. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of
  18. Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and materials owned by the school system.
  19. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  20. Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal and the special education

SALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 184 days

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
