Job summary

UPMC is hiring a detail-oriented Specimen Processor for our hospital lab. You will ensure accurate handling and timely processing of patient specimens, supporting reliable diagnostic results and patient care.

This role focuses on specimen receipt, labeling, centrifugation, and safe sample transport, with rotating shifts including evenings and weekends. Attention to detail, adherence to safety policies, and effective communication with lab staff and clinicians are essential to ensure quality

Responsibilities

• Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely processing of specimens.
• Investigate and resolve specimen problems and any requesting mistakes.
• Complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens or problems.
• Separate by centrifugation.
• Label aliquot tubes and transfer as policy; store samples at proper temperature.
• Determine and enter specimen receive time; respond to telephone inquiries.
• Verify patient specimens with requisitions or labels; ensure matching paperwork.
• Prepare, package and send specimens to outside locations as needed.
• Receive, sort and prioritize ALL specimens per lab policies.
