Job Title: Specialty Practice Pharmacist

Department: James Pharmacy

Location: James Cancer Hospital (0375)

Scope of Position

In cooperation with other pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, the pharmacist acts as a resource and provides answers to drug information questions for patients, family, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, medical students, undergraduate and graduate pharmacy students, and other associate hospital personnel. The pharmacist approves new drug orders, which may include checking/verifying chemotherapy notes, informed consent, and processing non‑formulary requests. The pharmacist screens for drug‑drug, drug‑herb/dietary supplement, drug‑allergy, drug‑food (in cooperation with the Dietetics Department), drug‑disease state and drug‑laboratory interactions. The pharmacist participates in appropriate hospital and/or departmental committees relevant to the practice area.

Position Summary

This position coordinates all aspects of patients’ pharmaceutical needs in the patient care areas. Duties include medication order approval and distribution; assurance of appropriate dose, route, frequency, and duration of therapy; patient medication profile review for drug‑drug interactions, duplication of therapy, drug allergy interactions, and appropriate regimens; coordination of patients’ pharmaceutical needs with physicians and nurses. The patient population includes adult, adolescent, geriatric, and neonatal patients, depending on the practice location. The pharmacist must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served and to identify medication dosing relative to the disease process and age. The position is also responsible for supervising Pharm.D. students, technicians, undergraduate and graduate student teaching, and providing educational programs for hospital staff (physicians, nurses, and pharmacy staff).

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire: Registered pharmacist in the State of Ohio; board certified; advanced degree (Pharm.D./MS) and residency; and/or equivalent experience preferred.

Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post‑offer process.
