Technician‑Specialty Pharmacy Job Code 22773 FLSA Status Job Family PHARMACY PROCESSLEVEL Job Description Title Technician‑Specialty Pharmacy Job Summary Job Summary This position is focused on providing exceptional care to patients, working closing with providers and leveraging various resources to ensure patients are getting the most out of their specialty pharmacy services. The Pharmacy Technician - Specialty Pharmacy is responsible for dispensing and packing pharmaceuticals for BSP patients under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with dispensing regulations and established guidelines. This team member is also responsible for supporting pharmacists to manage prior authorizations and assist patients to obtain financial assistance for their prescriptions. The individual in this position supports the BSP Director, BSP Pharmacy Staff and Clinical Pharmacists to ensure that all duties as assigned are fulfilled accordingly.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts the benefits investigation process, including coordination with payers to investigate and verify terms of patient coverage and out‑of‑pocket costs.
  • Provides timely and accurate information regarding coverage and cost to patients and BSP team members.
  • Initiates and manages prior authorization process for new specialty prescriptions and prospectively tracks expiring authorizations, obtaining renewals as needed to prevent gaps in treatment.
  • Supports BSP pharmacists to manage the appeals process for patients and ensures timely communication occurs.
  • Understands The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and billing guidelines and completes required training pursuant to BSP policies and procedures (e.g., fraud, waste, and abuse training).
  • Answers insurance and billing questions and provides feedback to management regarding contracting opportunities and process improvements.
  • Obtains all necessary paperwork and financial information needed for patients seeking financial assistance.
  • Conducts research on all available sources of funding and resources available for each particular BSP patient scenario.
  • Is responsible for daily billing operations, such as submission of claims (electronic and paper), patient statements, follow‑up and resolution of nonpayment, denials, and prior authorization requests.
  • Works timely to resolve urgent requests from patients, caregivers, and medical/nursing staff.
  • Processes new and refill prescriptions accurately, through the proper use of equipment and techniques, based on BSP policies and procedures for prescription entry and dispensing.
  • Provides superb customer service when communicating with patients and with medical/nursing staff to obtain key information needed to allow for dispensation of medication.
  • Monitors required areas for outdates, cleanliness, organization, and drug/supply stock levels.
  • Maintains, purchases and organizes inventory supply in a manner which minimizes inventory storage cost, wastage, and stock‑outs.
  • Ensures inventory is rotated properly, stored in appropriate conditions and location with 100% accuracy.
  • Prepares medication in a manner that minimizes cost due to wastage.
  • Participates in departmental process or quality improvement initiatives.
  • Understands and maintains all federal and state regulations and policies and procedures applicable to HIPAA practices and patient confidentiality.
  • Documents all activity and communication within designated documentation system.
  • Interacts with patients over the phone to coordinate prescription refill(s), specialty prescription deliveries, maintain updated billing information and patient address.
  • Completes special projects as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications

Minimum Required Experience: 5 years experience in outpatient pharmacy or clinic setting.

Minimum Required Licensure: Valid Pharmacy Technician License in TN and Pharmacy Technician Certificate (CPhT).
