Job description

The Specialty Medicine faculty member is a non-tenured position responsible for education in predoctoral didactic and/or clinical programs. This role involves collaborating with the Department Chair and colleagues to plan, direct, and implement college programs, policies, and curricula that integrate various specialty areas in team-based learning environments.

The responsibilities include teaching medical students, directing pre-clinical and clinical courses, engaging in scholarly activities, and serving on college and professional committees. The role also involves student advising, recruitment, retention, and placement efforts.

Specialty Medicine faculty positions cover various areas, including:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Radiology and Medical Imaging
  • Clinical Pathology
  • General Surgery and Surgical subspecialties (e.g., Anesthesiology, Urology, Orthopedics)
  • Internal Medicine subspecialties (e.g., Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Infectious Disease)
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: Deliver lectures, supervise clinical and laboratory activities, develop teaching materials, and collaborate on curriculum development and innovative teaching methods. May serve as Course Director or Co-Course Director.
  • Research: Engage in scholarly activities, contribute to knowledge creation, develop research programs, and supervise student research projects.
  • Service: Participate in college and community service, serve on committees, mentor students, and represent ICOM positively.
  • Adhere to institutional policies and promote diversity and inclusivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise student workers.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • DO or MD from a COCA-accredited medical school.
  • Board certification by the appropriate AOA or ACGME specialty board.
  • Successful record as an educator, with experience in teaching foundational medical concepts.
  • Experience with curriculum design, instructional methods, and educational evaluation preferred.
  • Proficiency in innovative teaching methods and exam item writing preferred.

  • Knowledge of instructional technologies and project management.
  • Effective problem-solving and public speaking skills.
