DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The Specialized Behavior Para-Educator, under the direction of the classroom teacher (s) or special education staff designee, serve as an assistant and resource to teachers in the supervision, teaching, observation, planning and training of students with disabilities who may require specialized behavior interventions: to assist with instructional planning, delivery and modifications, behavior interventions, and classroom engagement.
Specialized Behavior Para Educators are employed to work in designated Special Education Counseling Enriched or Everest Program. They may also serve as a one-to-one for students with behavioral, physical, social emotional, or health challenges as per their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
- Assists teachers, and works independently in delivering teacher designed lessons and other classroom activities. Under the direction of a teacher, prepares and implements lesson plans. E
- Assists and works independently in maintaining order among students in the classroom and on school grounds; assists with daily attendance. E
- Listens to and instructs groups of students; works with appropriate instructional materials; under the direction of a teacher, prepares tests for evaluation of students' progress and individualizes materials according to students' needs. E
- Assists and engages in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; assists with cumulative and other record keeping, including data collection on goals and behaviors of concern; and assists the teacher with other daily tasks associated with the classroom. E
- Operates audio-visual equipment, computers, and duplicating equipment. Grades papers and keeps records as directed by a teacher. E
- Attends to students' physical and emotional needs (intense, high frequency, self-injury, elopement, aggression, pica, etc.). E
- Assists teacher in in maintaining inventory of classroom supplies, books, incentives and teaching aids. E
- Orders and distributes supplies as instructed by the teacher. E
- Collaborates with IEP team and Special Education Staff, E
- Supervises groups of students in special activities or may serve as a one to one aide. E
- Prepares for, assists with, and cleans up after various classroom projects. E
- May travel from site to site and/or room to room based on district's needs. E
- Under appropriate supervision, conducts the activities of the classroom for a brief period of time in the absence of the teacher. E
- Assists students with and teaches skills related to toileting, feeding, grooming, and promoting independence.
- Assist students to, and from, and on buses, pushing wheelchairs when necessary. E
- Provide behavioral support assistance and implement behavior intervention plan to students and staff including direct observation of students, including linc of sight supervision for students who elope on and off of campus. E
- Performs ongoing physical activities, including transferring and lifting students using proper lifting techniques and/or equipment. E
- Under supervision of a qualified school nurse, may provide specialized healthcare procedures as described in Education Code Section 49423.5. E
- Collects behavioral data. E
- Implements a variety of common evidence based practices and behavior strategies under the direction of the teacher and IEP team, may include but not limited to: Discrete Trials Training, Pivotal Response Training, task analyses, augmentative and alternative communication including Picture Exchange Communication System, behavior contracts, social skills instruction, individually targeted skills instruction, visual schedules and supports, differential reinforcement, token economy, prompting hierarchies and behavior shaping, and Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). E
- Supervises assigned students on campus, during off campus activities or possibly on bus. E
- May apply initial first aid in the event of injury or illness. E
- Implement Safety Care or de-escalation techniques including personal safety techniques and restraint procedures during emergencies. Complete Emergency Behavior Reports following behavior incidents involving injury or restraint. E
- Attend specific trainings to deliver specialized services to attend to a student's individualized needs. E
- May serve in the capacity or a one to one para professional: to implement a behavior intervention plan or attend to a student's individualized special needs as outlined in an IEP, 504, or school plan ; or act as a specialized healthcare para, to implement a health plan
- May serve as an itinerant one to one for students with behavioral needs at various sites. E
- Other duties as assigned. E
- May also serve as a backup to temporarily provide specialized health care assistance to designated students. *Training and a stipend shall be paid as a backup at 2.5% of salary for the time served or serve as primary provider at 5% stipend of salary for the duration of the time served. Stipend will be designated on an annual basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Professional or volunteer work with children or adults with special needs is highly desirable.
- High School graduation or equivalent.
- Must meet requirements of "No Child Left Behind Act" (Associates Degree or higher or forty-eight (48) semester units from an accredited institution of higher learning or passage of the Para Educator Proficiency examination or equivalent.
- Previous experience in the specialized care and supervision of children is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF
- Educational, social, behavioral and psychological needs of assigned students
- Basic knowledge of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and servicing student with disabilities.
- Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and student recreational activities. Knowledge of appropriate basic subject matter from primary through secondary level.

- Understand and carry out oral and written directions; read, write, and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.
- Supervise students' activities in all school activities.
- Work independently with students as needed or in small groups.

- Engage in strenuous physical activity on a continuing basis.
- Work independently and operate electronic educational devices, school equipment, health related equipment; computer, tablet, wheelchair, hoyer lift, etc.
