Job summary

Aegon is seeking a Specialist Software Engineer to design and develop web and cloud technologies supporting an agile digital business. You will lead cloud-native architectures on AWS, build CI/CD pipelines, and develop serverless and containerized apps while enforcing security, cost, and performance considerations.

You will mentor teams, translate requirements into technical designs, and collaborate across product and engineering in a hybrid work setting.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement cloud-native architectures on AWS.

Job description

The Specialist Software Engineer is focused on the design and development of web and cloud technologies to support an agile digital business. Helps define web and cloud strategies, grow capabilities, and develops enterprise-wide solutions by providing technology leadership, insight on new developments within the application solution space, and guidance in design, framework, and platform decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement cloud-native architectures on AWS following Well-Architected Framework principles
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated testing, deployment, and infrastructure provisioning
• Develop serverless and containerized applications using Lambda, ECS/EKS, and API Gateway
• Implement Infrastructure as Code using CloudFormation, CDK, or Terraform
• Design and optimize data storage solutions (DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora, S3, ElastiCache)
• Establish security best practices including IAM policies, encryption, and network security
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Lead analysis and complex architectural design across platforms toward the development of end-to-end solutions; translate architectural guidance into detailed technical design.
• Work collaboratively with other development staff, including contract and offshore Software Engineers, and business product owners in an agile environment.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for a wide range of areas, applications, and technologies.
• Recommend solutions which take into consideration costs, business needs, and system impacts.
• Learn and keep pace with the latest advances in the field and rapidly grasp new technologies to support the environment and contribute to project deliverables.
• Prepare presentations and lead development meetings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, math, engineering, or other technical field, or equivalent experience
• 6 years of software development experience with 5+ years focused on AWS
• Deep expertise in core AWS services: EC2, Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, VPC, IAM, CloudFront, Route 53
• Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, CDK, or Terraform)
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Python, Node.js, Go, or similar)
• Experience designing event-driven architecture using SNS, SQS, EventBridge, or Kinesis
• Solid understanding of networking (VPC design, security groups, NACLs, Transit Gateway, PrivateLink)
• Experience leveraging continuous integration/development tools (e.g. Jenkins, Docker, Containers, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and container automation) in a CI/CD pipeline
• Strong knowledge of security best practices (IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, WAF)
• Experience with observability tools (CloudWatch, X-Ray, OpenTelemetry)
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (ECS, EKS, Fargate)
• Expertise with Microservices and REST based API development (e.g. Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Entity Framework, IIS, Swagger, Odata, .NET API 2, .NET API Core, AutoMapper)
• Attention to detail and results oriented, with a strong customer focus
• Technical communication skills and the ability to present information to all levels of the organization
• Problem-solving and technical communication skills
• Ability to prioritize workload to meet tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree
• Amazon Connect experience is key
• Abilit to understand complex system integrations across enterprise platforms
• Understanding of advanced analytics and machine learning concepts and technology implementations
• Understanding of AWS architecture, infrastructure, and framework principles
• Experience with big data and real time streaming analytics processing architecture
• Experience with data warehousing architecture and implementation, including source to target mappings and ETL.
• Technology or platform certifications (e.g. AWS, Microsoft)
• Knowledge of the financial services industry
• AWS Solutions Architect Professional or DevOps Engineer Professional certification
• Experience with multi-account strategies (AWS Organizations, Control Tower)
• Knowledge of data engineering services (Glue, Athena, Lake Formation)
• Experience with AI/ML services (Bedrock, SageMaker)

Working Conditions

• Hybrid Office Environment (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays)
• Work outside of normal business hours may be required
• Minimum Travel up to 10%

Compensation

The Salary for this position generally ranges between $131,000 - $160,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law. Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company’s discretion. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is a hybrid position requiring three days in office per week in one of our hub locations (Philadelphia, PA; Cedar Rapids, IA; Denver, CO). Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
