Job summary

Northern Trust is seeking a Senior Specialist in Non-Financial Risk Management to advise, review, and challenge risk practices aligned with corporate policies. Qualifications

  • 7+ years of Fortune 500 risk management consulting or dedicated second line risk management experience in financial services.
  • Professional risk designations or certificates such as PRM/ORM and related risk management credentials.

The Specialist will be a key member in a global Non-Financial Risk Management team providing advice, review, and challenge on risk related matters aligned to policies and standards. This role will establish and maintain close working relationships with key stakeholders and have intimate access to leaders working to develop solutions for real-world issues - excellent exposure for a risk management professional looking to further their career in asset management and financial services.

The key responsibilities of the role include:
  • Consult with first line leaders to ensure alignment with Northern Trust Corporation and Assessment Management policies, standards, and frameworks, including in relation to: governance practices; risk appetite, self‑assessment, monitoring, and reporting; control identification, design and effectiveness assessments; operational resiliency; cybersecurity; third‑party risk management; privacy; process change management
  • Independently manage and/or coordinate:
    • Business unit risk inventory assessment - advice/review/challenge - including the identification of trends or changes to likelihood, impact, and materiality
    • Business unit risk metric aggregation, analysis, and reporting - advice/review/challenge - to support governance committee oversight
    • Participate in and/or present to various committees, steering groups, working groups
    • Perform external continuous monitoring for consideration of impact to Northern Trust Corporation and Assessment Management, as well as internal continuous monitoring on business change initiatives to ensure risks are identified and aligned with risk appetite
    • Liaise with first line leaders and contribute thought leadership to technology/digital development initiatives/operating model/business processes/controls
    • Support leaders ahead of liaising with regulators, governance specialists and internal/external auditors
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
  • 7+ years of Fortune 500 risk management consulting or dedicated second line risk management experience in financial services, with preference to direct experience in asset management
  • Membership and exposure to ORX a plus, as well as risk designations and certificates such as: Professional Risk Manager (PRM); Operational Risk Manager (ORM); International Certificate in Enterprise (or Financial Services) Risk Management; Certificate in Operational Risk Management
  • Proficient in insight generation, professional judgement, influence, negotiation, and conflict management
  • Proficient understanding of risk frameworks, risk assessment, internal controls, including technology; business process and root cause analysis techniques
  • Advanced ability and desire for relationship management and business partnering, including listening, oral, written communication
  • Believes in the power of a diverse team and ideas, flexible and open to coaching, understands ethics and integrity
  • Behaves like a business owner, maintains attentional to detail, and maximizes productivity
Salary Range:

$114,700 - 194,900 USD

Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well‑being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
