Department: Communication and Creative Services

General Statement of Job

The Marketing Specialist will help coordinate, plan and implement the College's advertising efforts and provides marketing project management and support for Communications and Creative Services initiatives and college clients, ensuring that all marketing initiatives enhance and build the image of the college. The position also assists with promotional activities, college events, media opportunities, interviews, voice-over and media hosting projects and other initiatives that support the college's brand and marketing efforts.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
  • Implement advertising efforts and works collaboratively with the Executive Director of Creative Services and Marketing Manager to help advance the goals of the college.
  • Monitors assigned advertising projects and buys marketing projects, gets quotes from television, radio and online/print magazines, and reviews invoices for accuracy.
  • Assists the Marketing Manager with developing project plans and conducting risk analysis.
  • Assists the Marketing Manager with project review, vetting and selection.
  • Meets with clients to assess and determine marketing needs and prepares notes and initial recommendations.
  • Enters project plans into Teamwork project management software and assists with coordination of project workflow.
  • Assists in research and data collection regarding target audiences in order to establish better strategies.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of marketing and promotional efforts.
  • Builds relationships and collaborates with college faculty, staff, departments and committees to provide efficient and effective marketing services, training, media coaching and related support opportunities.
  • Assists with copywriting for advertising campaigns and recruiting collateral.
  • Keeps abreast of industry standards and innovation through a commitment to ongoing professional development in the fields of marketing, content strategy, advertising and trends impacting higher education.
  • Submits weekly project status reports.
  • Participates in college events and promotional activities, providing event coverage, conducting interviews and assisting with other marketing and media needs.
  • Represents the college and its brand through television, radio and other media opportunities as needed, including participating in interviews and promotional segments.
  • Assists with college voice-over projects as needed, including recording voice-over content for advertising, promotional and marketing materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications or related field required.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in advertising and/or a marketing environment required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read and comprehend specific instructions pertaining to media sources and advertising.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

Physical Requirements
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

  • Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
