Job summary

L3Harris is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the Unmanned Systems division in Ashburn, VA. You will solve manufacturing problems, drive continuous improvement, and work within an Integrated Product Team to execute manufacturing plans for advanced systems.

Role requires 4+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree (or 2+ years with a graduate degree; 8+ years if no degree) and active DoD clearance. Travel up to 5% and strong collaboration across disciplines are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 4+ years of relevant experience; graduate degree with 2+ years; or 8+ years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Active Department of Defense security clearance is required.
  • Experience in manufacturing methods for composites, metals, and electronics; strong technical writing and process documentation.
  • Experience with aviation or military systems manufacturing; excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and implement new manufacturing processes and technologies for emerging programs.
  • Provide technical input on product designs for manufacturability and cost reduction.
  • Review early prototyping/testing to feedback into design.
  • Identify capital equipment needs for capacity and capability expansion.
  • Mentor team members and contribute to IPT activities.
  • Lead Lean initiatives (5S, Tool Control) and standardize work instructions.
  • Communicate design feedback between manufacturing and engineering; sign off drawings as needed.
  • Travel up to 5% as required; support DoD security requirements.

L3Harris is searching for a Manufacturing Engineer to support the Unmanned Systems business in Ashburn, Va. This role is responsible for solving manufacturing problems with innovative solutions and driving continuous improvement in our manufacturing processes, be a key part of the Integrated Product Team to develop and execute manufacturing plans, and collaborating with other engineering disciplines, program management, quality assurance, and manufacturing. This role is apart of the Agile Development Group which is a division that specializes in developing disruptive, next-generation technologies for advanced Unmanned Air Systems (UAS / UAV), advanced radar systems, next-generation weapon systems, and other RF sensor technologies using small company agility and big company experience.

Essential Functions:
  • Investigate and implement alternate/new manufacturing processes and technologies for emerging programs.
  • Provide key technical input on all product designs for manufacturing ease and cost considerations. This includes analyzing different design approaches and manufacturing methods.
  • Examine early assembly prototyping/testing to provide feedback in the design process.
  • Identify and justify capital equipment needs for capacity and capability expansion
  • Provide technical mentorship for team in areas of expertise
  • Contribute to CAM and IPT activities
  • Initiate and review manufacturing workflow and processes/procedures such as:
    • Work/assembly instructions
    • Rework and modification instructions
    • Travelers/routers
    • Special process instructions
    • Standard repair instructions
  • Review and approve drawings for the Manufacturing Department (i.e. sign off authority).
  • Communicate information between the design and manufacturing teams and ensure that design feedback from manufacturing is relayed to engineering.
  • Lead and support Lean Manufacturing initiatives in the organization such as 5S, Tool Control, etc.
  • Up to 5% travel may be required
  • DoD secret clearance
Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

Must have an active Department of War Security Clearance

Preferred Additional Skills
  • Experience and knowledge of manufacturing methods, specifically in composites, metals, and electronics.
  • Experience with technical writing, specifically work instructions and process documentation.
  • Experience in aviation or military systems manufacturing
  • Excellent people skills to include collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team environment
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, & presentation)
  • Experience in a 3D CAD software. Experience in Creo is preferred
  • Experience with Power BI or data analytics
  • Experience/certification in lean practices; 5S, six sigma

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in the Greater D.C. areas is Min $84,000.00 - $156,000.00 Max. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
