Job summary

L3Harris Technologies is seeking an External Loads Engineer for our on-site facility in Waco, TX. You will analyze fixed-wing and rotary aircraft to generate and validate externally applied loads on the airframe, developing data and load cases for airframe models.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years in aircraft loads, strong FE skills, and MATLAB or similar scripting, plus familiarity with MSC PATRAN/FEMAP and Nastran.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or graduate degree in aerospace/mechanical engineering with related loads experience.
• Minimum 1 year experience in finite element modeling and analyses codes.
• Minimum 1 year experience in MATLAB or other scripting languages such as Python or VB.

Responsibilities

• Generate mass properties data, inertias and FE models to determine loads.
• Compile aerodynamic, mass and state data for combined load cases.
• Develop structural design criteria and documentation.
• Prepare diagrams, reaction forces, and load cases; run simulations and process data.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
• Willingness to work various shifts, weekends and overtime; up to 10% travel.

Job Description

L3Harris MMG Division is seeking for an experienced External Loads Engineer for our onsite facility located in Waco, TX. The External Loads Engineer will perform analysis of fixed wing and rotary aircraft to generate and compile externally applied loads on the aircraft. Designs, develops, and tests a variety of power plants, aircraft, missiles, and parts, taking into consideration the most efficient use of the natural laws affecting flight. Establishes structural design criteria, performs loads analysis, and supports loads validation tests.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for generating mass properties data, inertias and finite element models to determine inertial loads.
• Compile aerodynamic data, mass properties data, dynamics data, and aircraft state data to provide combined load cases to distribute to the airframe models.
• Develop structural design criteria data and documentation.
• Subtasks may include the generation of free-body diagrams, determination of reaction forces, preparation of shear and moment diagrams, execution of simulation tools, data processing and assimilation, and down selecting of critical conditions.
• Interact with other functional engineering disciplines.
• Willingness and ability to work any shift, weekends, and overtime as required.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 10%.
• Ability to obtain a US Secret security clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and minimum 4 years of prior structural engineering experience in developing aircraft loads. Graduate Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 2 years of prior structural engineering experience in developing aircraft loads. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
• Minimum 1 year experience in finite element modeling and analyses codes.
• Minimum 1 year experience in MATLAB or other scripting languages (Visual Basic, Pearl, Python, etc.).

Preferred Additional Skills

• MSC PATRAN or FEMAP and MSC Nastran.
• Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
• Knowledgeable in Military and/or commercial certification requirements.
• Ground and flight test loads experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and have general computer knowledge.
