Job summary

Oklahoma State Department of Health seeks a Temporary Special Educator I, II, or III to support children with developmental delays in home or childcare settings. You will provide health, developmental and educational services, screen and assess progress, and support families to promote learning and growth.

Positions range from Level I to III, with responsibilities scaling by level. A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s is preferred for higher levels.

This includes assessing and/or screening health and development in young children; coaching and modeling skills for families to implement to enhance their child’s opportunities in health, cognitive, personal-social, language, and motor development; serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team to monitor the effectiveness of child health and development services.This position is responsible for providing health, developmental and educational services in the areas of child health. Services are provided in the child’s natural environment settings in which children typically spend time, for example, home or childcare. Services include screenings, evaluations, intervention, and parent education.Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:The functions within this job family will vary by level; responsibility but may include, but are not limited to, the following:Provides early intervention services in the child and family’s natural environment (home, childcare, park etc.)Participates in family interview.Conducts intakes, including client interviews, and conducts assessments to make appropriate recommendations for services.Participating as a member of an interdisciplinary team in completing assessments and developing Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs).Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team to monitor the effectiveness of child health and development services.Determines eligibility and evaluates client needs.Administers onsite assessments and evaluations to coordinate direct special education early intervention services to improve learning skills.Provides learning interventions in the natural environment.Determines appropriate services and interventions for the child/family.Assists in initiating and implementing the steps necessary for smooth transition services from the early intervention program.Maintains confidential records of services including progress notes and evaluation reports in compliance with state and federal regulations.Being present in the office is an essential function of this jobOther duties as assignedOther DutiesDemonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.Works effectively in team environment, participating and assisting their peers.Minimum Qualifications:The Special Educator job family consists of four levels which are distinguished by the level of the complexity of specific job assignments, the extent of responsibility assigned for a specific task, and the level of expertise required for completion of assigned tasks.Level I:This is the basic level where incumbents perform beginning level professional work as a Special Educator and develop their technical skills in screening, evaluation, assessment, program planning, parent education and intervention while assisting in or performing various tasks.Requirements at this level consist of a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university and possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, certified in Special Education preferred but not mandatory. Plus, the ability to assess/evaluate children’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, motor, and adaptive abilities to develop educational outcomes to enhance school readiness.Level II:This is the career level where incumbents perform all essential functions at the full Special Educator performance level practicing at a high degree of flexibility, and independently develop and implement programs to meet the child and family’s educational needs and goals.Requirements at this level consist of a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university and possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, certified in Special Education preferred but not mandatory, plus one year of post-baccalaureate teaching experience. Plus, the ability to assess/evaluate children’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, motor, and adaptive abilities to develop educational outcomes to enhance school readiness.Level III:Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of completion of a Master’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education PLUS two years of teaching experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND possession of a valid teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education PLUS three years of teaching experience.Preferred Qualifications:Special education certification is preferred.Application Requirements:If education, certification or licensure is required to meet qualifications, applicants must provide documentation at the time of application.All applicants are subject to a background check and must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.Valued Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesLevel I & II:Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of early childhood development theories and concepts.
