Job summary

West Ottawa Public Schools is seeking a Special Educational Assistant – 1:1 to support a student at Lakewood Elementary in Michigan. This part-time role (29.5 hours/week) begins 8/27/2026 and reports to the Principal. A CPI training option is available and a high school diploma is required.

You will assist with instruction, transitions, and daily routines, following IEPs and health plans, to promote independence and participation throughout the school day.

Qualifications

• CPI trained or willing to be trained in CPI.
• High school diploma required.
• Experience working with children with disabilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide consistent, attentive 1:1 support to an assigned student throughout the school day.
• Assist the student in accessing and participating in classroom instruction, activities, specials, lunch, recess, assemblies, field trips, and other school experiences.
• Follow the student's IEP, behavior support plans, health/safety plans, and other established student support plans as directed.
• Support the student in developing independence by providing the least amount of assistance necessary.
• Assist with transitions between classrooms, activities, and school locations.
• Provide support with organization, materials, following directions, task completion, and classroom routines.
• Reinforce appropriate academic, social, communication, and behavioral skills during breaks and activities.
• Work with teachers to ensure materials are prepared and available.
• Provide breaks for support staff and teachers.
• Support student behavior management as needed, including personal care needs.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
• Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken work; those activities where detailed or import spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

• The worker should provide consistent and reliable in person attendance.
