Job summary

  • Assist in inclusive (general education) and specialized settings.
  • Supervise students throughout the school day (classroom, lunch, recess, transitions).
  • Assist students with personal care needs (toileting, feeding, hygiene) when required.
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Collaborate with special education and general education teachers, and support staff.

Position Overview West End Elementary is seeking a caring, dependable Special Education Teaching Assistant to support students with disabilities in reaching their full potential. This position works under the direction of a certified teacher to help implement individualized instruction, provide daily support, and ensure students have access to learning in the least restrictive environment.

Minimum Qualifications (SDPC Requirements)

Key Responsibilities


Instructional Support



  • Assist the teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

Student Supervision & Care



  • Supervise students throughout the school day (classroom, lunch, recess, transitions)

  • Assist students with personal care needs (toileting, feeding, hygiene) when required

  • Ensure student safety at all times



Inclusive Practices (Aligned to Louisiana Playbook)



  • Support students in the least restrictive environment (LRE) alongside peers

  • Help maintain high expectations for students with disabilities

  • Use scaffolds and support to promote independence

  • Reinforce evidence-based instructional strategies provided by the teacher



Collaboration & Communication



  • Work closely with special education teachers, general education teachers, and support staff

  • Assist with implementation of interventions and classroom strategies

  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality regarding student information



Data Collection & Progress Monitoring



  • Assist with collecting academic and behavioral data

  • Help monitor progress toward IEP goals

  • Share observations with the teacher to support instructional decisions
