Assabet Valley Collaborative is seeking a Special Education teacher to join our team in the 18‑22 Transition Program (Evolution).

Who We Are

Assabet Valley Collaborative (AVC) is an educational service agency in the Metrowest/Central Massachusetts region. We provide K‑12 and post‑graduate programs, wraparound and transportation services, professional development, purchasing, and consulting. AVC hosts multiple services internally, including three sections of the Evolution program. The open position is within Evolution.

Evolution is a transition program for young adults aged 18‑22 with diverse cognitive, physical, and social‑emotional needs. The Evolution‑Horizons teacher works with a classroom of 10‑15 students, collaborating with paraeducators, a counselor, a nurse, and rotating related services (OT, SLP, PT, music, vision, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Believes students succeed with positive reinforcement and behavioral supports.
  • Prioritizes instruction blending functional social and life skills, vocational and higher‑education training, and community‑based learning.
  • Facilitates communication between school and vocational sites.
  • Empowers students to become problem‑solvers and independent decision makers.
  • Plans rigorous, meaningful instruction.
  • Enjoys using students’ skill sets to support diverse learners.
  • Skilled at co‑designing and adapting a comprehensive curriculum for individualized, small‑group, and whole‑group activities.
  • Balances high academic and behavioral expectations with necessary accommodations and modifications.
  • Collaborates with families, sending districts, adult service agencies, employers, and in‑home providers to develop, present, and implement team‑drafted IEPs.
  • Provides supervision and coaching of paraeducators.
  • Establishes student‑centered data systems that inform instruction and generate progress reports.
  • Conducts necessary assessments and compiles results for 3‑year re‑evaluations.
  • Participates in required trainings and professional development.
  • Encourages enthusiasm for classroom work.
  • Adheres to federal, state, and local laws (FERPA, HIPAA, IDEA).
  • Experience in schools, nonprofits, or human‑service organizations.
  • Designs, delivers, and adapts curriculum with a team.
  • Develops an accessible schedule maximizing instructional time.

The ideal candidate would possess or demonstrate:

  • Team collaboration and independent work.
  • Conflict engagement and core tension navigation.
  • Bilingual or multilingual (a plus).
  • Passion for classroom community.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • Licensed or working toward MA DESE licensure in Moderate or Severe Disabilities.
  • Valid driver’s license, safe record, and ability to transport students in AVC vehicles.

Schedule

185‑day schedule, 8:15 a.m.–3:15 p.m. Summer hours are available but not required.

Physical Demands

This active position requires frequent physical movement to support students in learning, leisure, daily activities, and community access.
