Job Summary

Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in a variety of educational settings. Teachers create a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction; establish effective rapport with students; may modify general education curriculum to meet students' needs with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports; and establish good relationships with parents and other staff members. The teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.

Job Requirements

• A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.
  • Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
  • a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
  • a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
  • passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
  • an endorsement in the content area of this position.
• Educators teaching in a Kindergarten through 3rd grade class must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act.

The following are preferred:

• Evidence of experience working with special education students.
• Experience working collaboratively to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.

Essential Job Functions

• Describe philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to practice.
• Understand how students learn and develop, and apply that knowledge in practice.
• Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
• Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time, and assessment.
• Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and related activities.
• Teach students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
• Know the teacher's content area and how to teach it.
• Develop lesson plans and instructional material and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils.
• Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

Physical / Mental Demands

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with their hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. The employee must be able to interpret vague and implicit instructions, recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. Noise level is usually moderate, and the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display or to outdoor weather conditions.
