Qualifications

Special Education Teacher

Pelham Elementary School | 2026–2027 School Year


Pelham Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified and collaborative Special Education Teacher to join the dedicated team at Pelham Elementary School. Pelham Elementary is a small, close-knit school community committed to providing an inclusive, supportive, and academically engaging learning environment in which every student is known, valued, and supported.


The Special Education Teacher will provide specialized instruction and case management services to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The successful candidate will work closely with general education teachers, related service providers, families, and school Principal to ensure students have meaningful access to the curriculum and receive the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional supports necessary for success.


Essential Responsibilities


  • Provide specially designed instruction to students with disabilities in inclusive, small-group, and individual settings.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs that reflect students’ individual strengths and needs.

  • Serve as case manager for assigned students and maintain accurate and timely special education documentation.

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to differentiate instruction, provide accommodations and modifications, and support students’ access to the general education curriculum.

  • Collect and analyze academic, behavioral, and social-emotional data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction and interventions.

  • Participate in IEP Team meetings, student-support meetings, and other collaborative planning processes.

  • Communicate regularly and respectfully with families regarding student progress, needs, and programming.

  • Coordinate services with related service providers, specialists, paraeducators, and outside agencies, as appropriate.

  • Support the implementation of positive behavioral interventions and inclusive classroom practices.

  • Supervise and provide instructional guidance to paraeducators assigned to support students.

  • Administer assessments and prepare progress reports in accordance with state and federal requirements.

  • Maintain compliance with applicable special education laws, regulations, district procedures, and timelines.

  • Participate in professional learning, faculty meetings, and schoolwide initiatives.

  • Contribute to a welcoming school culture that centers student learning, well-being, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Student Services.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license in Moderate Disabilities, PreK–8, or another license appropriate for the assignment.

  • Sheltered English Immersion endorsement or the ability to obtain it within the required timeframe.

  • Knowledge of federal and Massachusetts special education laws and regulations.

  • Experience developing and implementing standards-aligned IEPs.

  • Ability to provide differentiated, evidence-based instruction to students with diverse learning needs.

  • Strong collaboration, communication, organization, and case-management skills.

  • Commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive, and student-centered educational practices.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in special education or a related field.

  • Previous experience teaching students with disabilities in an elementary school setting.

  • Experience with inclusive practices, co-teaching, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, and positive behavioral interventions.

  • Experience collaborating with paraeducators, related service providers, and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Familiarity with special education data systems and progress-monitoring tools.


Compensation

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Placement on the salary schedule will be based on relevant education and experience.
