Under direction of the Principal and/or Assistant Principal, the Special Education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher and the student’s team members. Special Education Teachers must possess knowledge of differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, and other pertinent special education policies and laws. Special educators perform special education case management responsibilities that include the development, implementation and monitoring of Individualized Education Program (IEP) plans in collaboration with teachers, related service providers, families, and the student.
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be included in further evaluation. Interviews will be limited to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, have experience and education which most closely match the position qualifications and the needs of the school system.
Compensation: This is a 10‑month per year position in the HCEA employee bargaining unit. The current salary range for this position is on the 10‑Month Special Education Teacher salary scale. Actual placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the HCPSS and the HCEA Master Agreement, which considers education and relevant prior experience. The position is exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Retirement: Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is mandatory for eligible employees. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.
Benefits: HCPSS offers a comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees. Additional benefits such as paid time off are outlined in the negotiated agreement for employees in this bargaining unit.
Pre‑Employment Requirements: Professional references will be contacted prior to any offer of employment. All employees, regular and temporary, must be fingerprinted, undergo a criminal background investigation, and complete the Maryland Employment History Review. Some positions may require a physical examination and/or drug testing.
