Job summary

Sargent Rehabilitation Center Inc seeks a Special Education Teacher for Elementary and Middle grades to support students with disabilities in a small-group setting. You will collaborate with therapists, teaching assistants, and job coaches to tailor instruction and ensure access to academics and functional skills, including participation in RI Alternate Assessments and college prep tasks.

Starting immediately, you will design individualized plans, deliver core instruction, and support families.

Qualifications

  • RI certification as a Special Educator required.
  • Experience with children with social, emotional and behavioral challenges preferred.
  • Experience with children with developmental disabilities and autism.
  • Familiarity with RI Alternate Assessments and other state assessments.
  • Experience collaborating with Teaching Assistants and families.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, respectful learning environments addressing learning and social/emotional/behavioral needs.
  • Deliver core academic instruction aligned with standards across multiple grade levels and offer remediation and extension.
  • Design learning opportunities with academic, experiential, or service-based components.
  • Collaborate with families, faculty, administrators and outside treatment teams.
  • Write Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Model and implement interventions in collaboration with other teachers.
  • Redesign environments to improve student outcomes.
  • Address cultural differences in social interactions.
  • Use varied instructional techniques to address learning challenges.
  • Teach and reinforce prosocial skills and behaviors.
  • Support implementation of interventions by educators and staff.
  • Collect data for regulatory reports and inform instruction and decisions.
  • Maintain student records and confidentiality.
  • Guide decisions on evidence-based academic and behavioral practices.

Special Education Teacher - Elementary and Middle

Job Description

The Special education teacher is directly under the supervision of the Director of Sargent Center School and Special Education. He/she supports students with disabilities within a small group setting, providing specialized instruction. The students are also supported within their enrichment classes such as martial arts, theater, PE, recess. The Special Education teacher works collaboratively with the therapists, teaching assistants, and job coaches, to modify work to the student’s appropriate level, and ensure student access to academics, peers, and functional skills. The Special Education teacher facilitates the RI Alternate Assessment for students as well as PSAT’s, SAT’s and or RICAS.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Rhode Island certification as a Special Educator at the level assigned
  • Three years of experience as a special education teacher at the level assigned preferred
  • Successful direct experience with children exhibiting social, emotional and behavioral challenges
  • Successful experience working with children with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities and autism
  • Successful experience and training in RI Alternate Assessments, and other state assessments
  • Successful experience working with a team including Teaching Assistants
  • Understanding of critical practices and systems of positive behavior support
  • Evidence of successful engagement with families
  • Knowledge of state and federal special education eligibility criteria
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations and willingness to implement the special education process
  • Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work with educators, administrators, and parents to problem-solve challenging issues
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide a learning environment that is safe, respectful and effective for meeting students’ learning and social/emotional/behavioral challenges;
  2. Provide core academic instruction in compliance with Common Core/Essential Elements standards at multi grade levels and offer remediation as well as extension;
  3. Design learning opportunities that have an academic, experiential and/or service based component;
  4. Work collaboratively and supportively with families, faculty and administrators and outside treatment teams;
  5. Write Individualized Education Programs;
  6. Model and implement interventions in collaboration with other teachers;
  7. Redesign environments to increase the likelihood of success;
  8. Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences in social interaction patterns and styles;
  9. Use multiple instructional techniques such as role playing, modeling, and direct feedback to address learning challenges;
  10. Enhance students’ personal and social success by teaching social skills;
  11. Support adults in the integration of interventions to improve outcomes and coach adults in the implementation of identified interventions;
  12. Collect data for regulatory compliance reports; analyze data to inform instruction and support school and district decision making.
  13. Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality;
  14. Support decision making framework that guides the selection, integration and implementation of the best evidence based academic and behavioral practices for improving outcomes for all students;
  15. Teach and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors;
  16. Maintain certification around desocialization strategies and physical management;
  17. Perform other tasks as may be assigned by the Director of Sargent Center School and Special Education.
