Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Teacher to join our team at Westdale Elementary School. This full‑time position focuses on supporting middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Emotional Impairments (EI). The ideal candidate will create an inclusive and engaging learning environment, adapting curriculum and instruction to meet the diverse needs of students while fostering their academic, social, and emotional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of students with ASD and EI.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure a cohesive educational experience for all students.
  • Utilize evidence‑based teaching strategies and interventions to support student learning and behavioral needs.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting instructional strategies as needed to meet goals outlined in IEPs.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, challenges, and successes.
  • Create a safe and supportive classroom environment that promotes respect, understanding, and acceptance among all students.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in special education and ASD/EI strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of student assessments, IEP documentation, and progress reports.
  • Advocate for the needs of students with disabilities within the school community.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging their independence, self‑advocacy, and social skills development.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in education.
  • Valid Michigan teaching certification in Special Education, with endorsements in ASD and EI, or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience working with middle school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Emotional Impairments, highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of IEP development, implementation, and compliance with special education laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Proficient in using technology and educational software to enhance learning and communication.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with students with diverse needs.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying informed about current trends in special education.
  • Ability to manage classroom behavior and implement positive behavior support strategies.
