Job summary

Muskegon Heights Public School Academy is seeking a Special Education Teacher to coordinate and facilitate curriculum and instruction for students with disabilities, across placements, to increase knowledge and skills. Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with major in a specific special education area.
• Masters preferred.
• Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with the appropriate endorsement(s) for all subject area(s) being taught.
• Minimum 1 year of work experience with special needs children.

Responsibilities

• Plans and implements purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teacher strategies and maximizes time on task.
• Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning using a variety of teaching strategies.
• Encourages student enthusiasm and development of good study habits.
• Uses research-based models and philosophies for teaching students with disabilities across placements.
• Assesses students with disabilities for identification and instruction.
• Uses assistive technology to support students’ abilities.
• Develops and implements IEPs and conducts IEP team meetings with parents and students; facilitates transitions.
• Ensures reasonable classroom behavior rules and applies them consistently.
• Protects students, coworkers, equipment, and facilities.
• Supervises students when needed.
• Implements accommodations and modifications for assessments.
• Communicates with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and human services staff.
• Provides progress and interim reports as required.
• Uses effective oral and written communication.
