SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Full Time/Part Time Regular Full Time Total Hours Per Week 35 From Salary $52,000 To Salary $66,960
Job Summary
The Special Education Teacher assumes primary responsibility for the day to day classroom behavioral management and academic program for his/her students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Implements original Individualized Education Program (IEP) and prepares subsequent IEPs and Progress Reports with input from the classroom staff and clinical staff as needed for Requested Reviews and Ann ual Reviews.
- Develops instructional material and activities addressing monthly themes and implements then in a developmentally appropriate manner according to the High Scope curriculum.
- Plans and implements individual and group activities for children.
- Meets with teacher aides, clinical staff and administrators in team meetings to plan for the academic and behavioral progress of individual children.
- Collaborates with clinical staff to design intervention strategies for children in crisis in order to address significant social/emotional behaviors of individual children.
- Maintains open and frequent communication with parents and reaches out to parents who are reluctant to come to the school.
- Participates in In-Service training, staff meetings, team meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
- Maintains the order and cleanliness of the classroom environment.
- Addresses the hygienic and health needs of individual children.
- Orders materials for the classroom.
- Completes all required paperwork.
- Provides direct supervision of teacher aides and makes an input into the teacher aide’s formal evaluation.
- Directs arrival and dismissal of children to and from the bus.
Education & Experience
BA/BS Degree.
One of the following Special Ed Preschool Certifications is required:
- New York State Certification - Students With Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) Professional Certificate
- New York State Certification - Students With Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) Initial Certificate
- New York State Certification – Special Education Teacher Permanent Certificate
- Has a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education or an associates degree in Early Childhood Education– will be on a study plan to obtain New York State Teacher Certification
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) Preferred

- Ability to interact with and complete assignments in a manner sensitive to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
Physical Requirements
Able to provide physical "hands-on" intervention when necessary
