Job summary

Amergis is seeking a Special Education Teacher in New York for a five-year on-site contract at the OCFS MacCormick Secure Center. The role delivers services per IEPs and 504 plans, supports classroom staff, maintains records, develops IEP/504 documents, and leads meetings.

Responsibilities include creating referrals, preparing IEP drafts, participating in CSE meetings, supervising aides, and communicating with parents to support skill generalization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university preferred.
  • Valid state teaching certificate as required by state, contract/district regulations
  • Minimum of one year experience in teaching environment preferred
  • State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Elementary Teaching preferred
  • State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Secondary Teaching preferred
  • State Teacher Certification; Type: Standard Special Teaching preferred
  • Endorsement: Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) preferred
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
  • Current CPR if applicable
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Responsibilities

  • Provides modifications as outlined in 504 plans and accommodations.
  • Supports classroom staff in line with students’ IEPs/504 plans.
  • Maintains logs and records for compliance.
  • Maintains Consultant Log for each assigned student with an IEP.
  • Creates referrals for CSE meetings, FBA/BIP, or initial CSE referrals.
  • Prepares rough drafts of IEPs/504 plans before CSE meetings.
  • Actively participate in CSE meetings, providing data and facilitation.
  • Develops qualitative, in-depth IEPs/504 plans for youth.
  • Maintains records and paperwork for annual/tri-annual reviews.
  • Manages time, materials, and schedules; communicates with parents.
  • Delivers and assesses instruction; develops and assesses IEP goals.
  • Provides supervision to Teacher’s Aides.

Job description

Duties of the SPED teacher position:
  • Provides the continuum of services according to each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

  • Provides all necessary modifications as outlined in students’ 504 plans, which are plans for a student to receive needed accommodation.

  • Provides classroom support for the other educators in the classroom as required by the student’s IEP’s/504 plans.

  • Maintains all appropriate logs.

  • Maintains Consultant Log for each assigned student with an IEP.

  • Create referrals, as needed, for all Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA’s), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP’s) or Initial Referral for CSE meetings, and other referrals requiring special education input.

  • Prepares rough draft of all assigned student IEP’s/504 plans prior to the Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings using information from teachers, staff, parents, legal guardians, students, documented educational history and direct observations.

  • Actively participate in each Committee on Special Education meeting, providing data while also facilitating aspects of the meeting, as needed.

  • Development of qualitative, in-depth, and accurate IEPs/504 plans for youth.

  • Maintain all records and files related to special education including all required paperwork for annual and tri-annual review.

  • Time management, organization and management of materials, equipment, paperwork, and schedules.

  • Responsible for parent communication and parent education opportunities for students with disabilities, which builds a partnership between parent-school and supports generalization of student's skills across settings.

  • Prepares, delivers, and assesses individual and group instruction on a daily basis. Responsible for developing, training, and assessing student IEP goals and objectives.

  • Provides supervision to Teacher’s Aides.

Details on Position:
  • The Special Education Teacher must meet the following requirements and commitments during service delivery:

  • The Special Education Teacher will commit to a 37.5-hour work week for the duration of the contract (IFB Section 1.2 Term of Contract). The Special Education Teacher will not work on days in which New York State offices are closed. Refer to Section 2.3 Delivery for additional information.

  • The Special Education Teacher will provide on-site in-person services for the full duration of the contract to provide continuity of care for the youth in the OCFS-operated MacCormick Secure Center. This is anticipated to be a five (5) year obligation.

  • The Special Education Teacher must agree to participate in an interview with OCFS DJJOY facility and program staff to verify the proposed candidate understands and agrees to fulfill the needs of the position.

  • The Special Education Teacher will possess the following educational and experience requirements:

  • NYS Special Education Teacher certification that will allow the teacher to satisfy requirements to provide special education services to students in grades 7-12 (ex. Certified for special education K-12 or certified for special education grades 7-12)
