Job summary

The Darlington County School District is seeking an Exceptional Education Shadow for North Hartsville Elementary for the 183-day 2026-2027 school year. The role assists the teacher with supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs and helps implement IEP plans in the general education setting.

Responsibilities include adapting activities, administering tests, data collection on IEP goals, and collaborating with school staff.

Qualifications

  • Sixty academic credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Associate degree (or higher) required.
  • High School Diploma or the equivalent AND Ready to Work Credentials: WIN Level 3 or ParaPro passing score (456).

Responsibilities

  • Acts as mandated reporter for student safety.
  • Adapt classroom activities to support IEP goals.
  • Administer tests and assignments to support student needs.
  • Assist students with personal care needs as required.
  • Attend meetings and communicate progress with staff and health professionals.
  • Escort students to and from destinations to ensure safe transitions.
  • Implement interventions under supervision to reinforce learning concepts.
  • Monitor student behavior and data handling for decision making.
  • Provide instruction to students in individual and group settings to support instructional objectives; ensure access to least restrictive environment.
  • Supervise students in various settings to maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Support during emergencies and drills to ensure safety.
  • Collect data on IEP goals for accurate records.

Salary: $21,066 base salary (based on education and full time experience)

Location: North Hartsville Elementary

Available: 2026-2027 School Year

  • A negative TB test must be on file prior to starting work

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications

Minimum of sixty (60) academic credit hours from an accredited

institution of higher education

or

An associate degree (or higher)

OR

Item (1) High School Diploma or the equivalent

AND

Item (2) Ready to Work Credentials

  • WIN - Copy of WIN Assessment minimum of Level 3 certification or
  • ParaPro - Copy of passing score (minimum 456) on ParaPro,

the state approved academic assessment

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Responsible To: Principal

Job Goal: To assist the teacher with supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in the general education setting; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Performance Responsibilities

  • Acts as a mandated reporter for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the students.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and meeting IEP goals.
  • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting student needs in the classroom.
  • Assists students (e.g. diapering, lifting, transitioning from desk to wheel chair etc.) for the purpose of attending to the student's personal hygiene and care needs.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, and a variety of health care professionals, and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating progress or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Escorts student (e.g. bathroom, classroom, community, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from a destination.
  • Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, research based interventions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions.
  • Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to the student in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring the student's access to his/her least restrictive environment.
  • Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. community field trips, hallways, bus loading areas, cafeteria, parking lots, classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Supervises and escorts the student during any and all emergency drills or during actual emergencies for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment.
  • Collects data on the student's IEP goals for the purpose of maintaining accurate records and engaging in data based decision making.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
