Job summary

Saginaw Intermediate School District seeks a Supervisor of Special Education to lead and manage ancillary services, evaluate staff, and sustain mentoring programs. The role partners with Human Resources to implement onboarding, recruitment, and professional development in line with federal and state mandates.

The position emphasizes collaboration with district staff and external agencies to ensure compliant, effective services for students with disabilities and ongoing program improvement.

Qualifications

  • Michigan Teacher Certificate with endorsement in Special Education.
  • Master's degree in Special Education preferred.
  • Supervisor of Special Education approval in Michigan, full or temporary.
  • Administrator certificate or plan to complete in three years.
  • Minimum three years of professional practice in Special Education, or relevant admin experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative oversight for the SISD Ancillary Service work team.
  • Perform evaluative duties and IDP support for ancillary staff.
  • Lead and oversee ancillary work teams within Special Education.
  • Align onboarding processes for ancillary staff in Special Education with Human Resources.
  • Maintain staffing and caseload details for accurate reporting.
  • Develop staffing plans and assess local and county-wide needs, including virtual partnerships.
  • Liaise with Human Resources to support staff attraction and retention.
  • Oversee the SISD Mentor program within Special Education with HR consultation.
  • Support on-site use of Frontline or equivalent staff evaluation systems.
  • Administer Special Education programs per mandates and develop in-service training.
  • Assist in selecting and disseminating materials for students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with HR to recruit interns and create pathways for intern employment.
  • Maintain accurate records of professional activities and serve as liaison with partners.
  • Maintain professional competency through meetings, training, and professional organizations.

Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Executive Director and Director of Special Education, the Supervisor of Special Education will provide leadership that includes, but is not limited to, the administration and management of Special Education Services and Programs by SISD Ancillary staff and those activities adjunct to Special Education. The Supervisor will manage Special Education ancillary staff, including evaluation of service providers. In addition, the Special Education Supervisor will be responsible for sustaining and adapting the SISD Teacher Mentoring program and partnering with other departments for its implementation.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide Administrative Oversight for the SISD Ancillary Service work team
  • Perform evaluative duties and IDP support for various ancillary staff
  • Lead and provide oversight to ancillary work teams
  • Implement and continue the alignment of the SISD onboarding processes for ancillary staff within the Special Education department, along with consultation with Human Resources.
  • Maintain staffing and caseload details for accurate reporting and identify needs in a timely manner
  • Develop staffing plans and provide recommendations regarding local and county-wide staffing needs, including the evaluation of any needed virtual partnerships
  • Actively liaison with Human Resources to provide insight and strategy development for staff attraction and retention
  • Implement and continue the alignment of the SISD Mentor program within the Special Education department, along with consultation with Human Resources.
  • SISD on-site administrative support for Special Education staff for Frontline or comparable staff evaluation system.
  • Administer Special Education Programs and Services as per the Federal, State and ISD Special Education Mandates, including, but not limited to:
  • Developing needs assessments and in-service training for Special Education ancillary staff.
  • Assist the Special Education ancillary providers in the selection, procurement, and dissemination of materials designed for use with students with disabilities.
  • Work in collaboration with Human Resources to recruit interns through university programs, and develop pathways for intern employment
  • Keep accurate records of professional activities.
  • Function as a liaison with the school staff, community agencies, and professional organizations regarding special education.
  • Maintain professional competency by attending meetings, in-services, conferences, workshops and participating in professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Special Education
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Michigan Teacher Certificate with at least one area of endorsement in Special Education.
  • A Master's Degree, preferably in Special Education.
  • Full or temporary approval as a Supervisor of Special Education in Michigan.
  • Administrator Certificate or ability to complete in three years.
  • Three years of successful professional practice in Special Education, administrative experience in Special Education, or a combination thereof.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others as a team member in a work-team environment.
  • Ability to meet the needs of the District to which they are assigned and the residents of that district.
COMPENSATION:

The district will provide a competitive compensation package with salary commensurate with the education and experience of the candidate. A two-year contract with provisions for annual review and evaluation will be offered. A fringe benefit package is offered which includes health, dental, vision, life, and long term disability insurances.
