Job Description

Summary:

Responsible for working closely and assisting teachers, as well as other specialeducation staff with the individualized care of students with special needs and the implementation of instructional programs and management of behavior of students with disabilities.

Hours: 6 1/2 hours a day, Monday - Friday student days, 7:15 am - 2:15 pm

  • Assist the classroom teacher/staff with instructional activities outlined in student's individualized educational program (IEP)
  • Participate in program planning to assist in the development of student instructional plans
  • Maintain program records, monitor student progress and reports as directed
  • Assist with the physical care of students, including lifting and daily living activities
  • Assist with proactive behavioral interventions to support students
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of students
  • A strong desire to work with special education students
  • Provide students with a safe and orderly environment for learning
  • Employee must have the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, public and other staff members.
  • Employee must exhibit a positive attitude, creativity, independent thinking and be able to take initiative.
  • Attends IEP Meetings and other meetings to plan for students with special needs
  • Speak, hear, see and write clearly with or without assistive device(s).
  • Walk, stand for the full scheduled period, with minimal sitting options.
  • Adhere to all Board and District policies
  • Regular, predictable and physical attendance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintains consistent, predictable and physical attendance to meet the requirements of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or higher
  • High School Diploma/GED along with Passing one of the formal assessments: WorkKeys Test (prior to January 2017); ETS ParaPro Assessment; MTTC Basic Skills Test for Teacher Certification
  • Must meet Highly Qualified requirements as defined by the Michigan Department of Education
  • Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with special education students

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be physically present, regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust, focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise students when the teacher is temporarily absent

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to performbasic computer skills, email, calendars, work orders and basic office programs

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtractand multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
  • Ability to solve problems in a professional manner
