Evergreen Public Schools Archway Academy in Vancouver, WA is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator for the Transition Program. This part-time role supports the Transition Program Instructor and Special Services Coordinator with middle/high school students in community and work placements. Hours are 6 per day (9:35 a.m.

  • Be at least eighteen years old and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must meet one of the following: (a) ETS ParaPro score 455+; (b) Associate degree or higher; (c) 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher; (d) Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program.
  • Completion of state required training for new paraeducators upon hire.
  • Position is permanent with salary placement at the minimum of the classification range.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Transition Program instructor in supervising and working with secondary students.
  • Provide one-to-one and small-group instruction aligned with IEP goals.
  • Help establish and maintain a conducive learning environment per curriculum outcomes.
  • Assist students with job skills and community placements.
  • Support transportation orientation and maintain student data files and logs.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR


TRANSITION PROGRAM


LOCATION: Archway Academy


REPORTS TO: Transition Program Instructor/Special Services Coordinator


DEPARTMENT: Special Services


Hours / Work Times


6 Hours Per Day (9:35 a.m. – 4:05 p.m. includes 30 minutes unpaid lunch)


181days per year (171 student days/10 holidays)


This position will remain open until a qualified applicant is selected. The earliest date a recommendation for hire may be submitted is after 10/07/26.

Must meet Paraeducator Employment Requirements as follows*:



  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent;AND

  • Must meet one or more of the following:



  • Have received a passing score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service ParaPro Assessment (ETS test/PRAXIS);or

  • Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university;or

  • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university;or

  • Have completed a Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program (program must be registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council).


*If you do not meet the required qualifications listed above, your name will be screened out from the list of qualified candidates.


Upon hire, new paraeducators will be required to complete state required training offered through Evergreen School District.

Salary Placement: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service of similar occupational experience may receive experience credit towards salary step placement.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Under the supervision of the Transition Program Instructor and the Special Services Program Coordinator, the Special Education Paraeducator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students on an individual as well as a small group basis in the schools and community. The assistant must be able to work a flexible and variable daily schedule in order to assist students in their various community and work placements.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Assist the Transition Program instructor in supervising and working with secondary students as follows:


    • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and members of the business community. (*5)

    • Assist in providing one-to-one and group instruction to students so as to meet his/her individualized education program (IEP). (*9)

    • Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes. (*10)

    • Assist students in whatever skills are necessary in order to be successful on the job.

    • Provide orientation and support in the use of public transportation when necessary.

    • Maintain student data files, including attendance records, wage reports and work evaluations. Maintain a log of activities and employer contacts. (*9)

    • Implement behavioral management strategies using the emphasis and techniques that have been outlined by the teacher. (*6)

    • Assist in organizing and preparing a variety of instructional materials. (*9)

    • Handle body fluids as necessary. (*13)

    • Lift and/or position students as necessary. (*13)

    • Attend various training sessions as necessary so as to maintain an up-to-date understanding of the Special Education student(s).

    • Travel from location to location to accomplish tasks.


  • Assess initial skill levels and readiness for training of students.

  • Supervise and teach student/employee job tasks onsite and adjust as assignment/responsibilities change.

  • Ensure that all necessary accommodations, assistive technology or equipment items are in place and understood by all.
