Job Description
Westfield Public Schools seeks qualified applicants for the following vacancy at Westfield Intermediate School.
Job Summary
- Assist the student(s) to whom assigned with physical tasks such as putting on/off clothing, moving between rooms, using the lavatory, feeding, etc.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on understanding of each student's needs, interests, and abilities.
- Establish a supportive relationship with the student(s) without fostering intense emotional involvement.
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Assist teacher in duties related to the supervision of playground, lavatory, cafeteria, and bus loading activities.
- Assist with lunch, snack, and clean‑up routines.
- Participate in in‑service training programs.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of Schools.
Reports to: Building Principal
Terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Public Schools Unit D contract.
Performance will be in accordance with the Westfield School Committee policy on evaluation.
Position Type: Full‑time
Salary: $18 to $28 per hour
Job Requirements
- Qualifications:
- Possession of an associate degree or higher, or 48 credit hours from a higher education institution, or passage of the ParaPro or Work Keys assessment completed within three years of hire.
- Demonstrated interest in children and education.
- Evidence of emotional maturity and stability necessary for specialized work.
- Ability to communicate and work successfully with staff and students.
- Work is generally conducted within school building; ability to travel throughout the building is necessary. Position involves sitting and walking within the classroom. Lifting up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds occasionally with some pulling/pushing or reaching above. Frequent use of hands for keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment. Regular attendance is essential.
- At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Associate degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
