Special Education Classroom Instructional Assistant

Overview

The Special Education Classroom Instructional Assistant provides assistance and motivation to students with disabilities or special needs. The role involves working closely with students throughout the school day to support their learning and success in various classroom settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work effectively with children having disabilities and special needs in both integrated and special education classrooms.
  • Collaborate with teachers, co-workers, parents, and caregivers as part of an educational team.
  • Maintain professional, legal, and ethical standards in interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Motivate students to build self-esteem, independence, social skills, and self-advocacy.
  • Utilize assistive technology, computers, and adaptive equipment to facilitate learning.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate instructional interventions across various developmental areas.
  • Maintain accurate data on student progress and provide feedback to teachers.
  • Respect and appreciate diversity in skills, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and values.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria prior to employment:

  • Two years of higher education study, or
  • Associate degree or higher, or
  • Voluntary certification through the Board of Educational Examiners (Paraeducator Certification), or
  • Successful completion of ACT WorkKeys assessments (Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, Reading for Information).

Additional Requirements

A minimum of a high school diploma and previous experience working with children are required. A paraeducator certification is preferred. For preschool roles, candidates should meet specific criteria such as certification with an early childhood endorsement, CDA, or a two-year degree or higher, with the ability to obtain these within one year of employment.
