SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATE

Title: Special Education Associate Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly

Reports To: Building Principal & Supervising Teacher Pay Schedule: SpEd Associate

Responsibilities
  1. SUMMARY: Assist students with basic classroom work, including computers, language arts, math and research. Assist classroom teacher with preparing classroom work as needed. Support student in general and special education classroom.
  2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Listed below are the essential tasks required for this job.
  3. Provide support to special education students in the regular and special education classrooms. Supports may include:
    • Assisting students by adapting work
    • Monitoring and enforcing social and acceptable behavior
    • Implementing health care plans, toileting assistance, academic support
    • Assisting students in the cafeteria and other times as required, including getting on and off the bus
    • Assisting in crisis situations involving physically aggressive students, including restraining and documentation
    • Working with behavior students; trained in CPI and understands rules and protocols for behavior management
    • Implementing specialized therapy programs
    • Assisting with body positioning and movement strategies to support a student
  4. Assist students with classroom activities and curriculum delivery to individuals and small groups to ensure mastery of subjects
  5. Assist teachers with grading, attendance, instructional centers; prepare materials, laminating, copying, filing, etc.
  6. Mentor, support and assist students with a variety of abilities to become competent, independent adults
  7. Supervise and monitor students during playground, lunchroom, field trips, passing periods, and other classroom activities; support eloping students by maintaining proximity for safety
  8. Assist injured or sick students to the health room
  9. Cover classroom for short periods when the teacher is called out of the classroom
  10. Assist with assessment testing and monitoring of student performance
  11. Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Related Work Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • No experience required; experience preferred in working with children
