Summary

Help meet the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a self‑contained classroom. Assist in implementing classroom programs, including behavior management, self‑care, and instructional activities. Work under the principal’s general supervision and the certified teacher’s immediate direction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists teacher in an instructional setting.
  • Assists teacher in maintaining classroom discipline using appropriate methods for children with and without disabilities, including intervening in crises and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed using CPI techniques.
  • Organizes and manages student work under teacher direction.
  • Assists teachers in correcting and recording student work and in testing students.
  • Assists students with daily work, including on computers with various computer programs and testing programs.
  • Works directly with students with various special needs, recognizing differences in each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapting methods and interaction accordingly.
  • Implements planned activities using teacher‑designed methods and materials for individual and small student groups for instructional support.
  • Supervises various student activities, including the playground, cafeteria, bus loading and unloading, field trips, hallways, and other areas where students gather.
  • Prepares and provides clerical support to the teacher for instructional materials using various office equipment, resource materials, AV equipment, copying, faxing, etc.
  • Maintains accurate records and records gathered information within the scope of District policies and state and federal laws while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Obtains necessary instructional materials from a variety of sources.
  • Assists with toileting students who are incontinent or require assistance with catheterization or transfer and provides other personal care needs, including diapering as necessary.
  • Administers medications within the scope of District policies and state and federal laws, including diabetes management and insulin administration using an insulin pen or a non‑needle injection system.
  • Assists with wheelchair transfers as required by student needs.
  • Implements Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications at the teacher’s request.
  • Schedules and assists with IEP meetings.
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Responsible for properly utilizing, operating, and maintaining all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sets up room for various activities and cleans up after activities’ completion.
  • Answers telephones, responds to questions or takes messages and forwards them to the teacher.
  • Assists with school‑wide events.
  • Assists with the inventory of textbooks.
  • Assists with in‑home visits.

  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English; preference may be given to applicants fluent in Spanish; ability to present information and respond effectively to questions in one‑on‑one, small, and large group settings.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference; apply basic concepts of algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several variables in standard situations.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e‑mail, internet, spreadsheets, teaching software, and word processing.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certifications as determined necessary by the District, including current highly qualified requirements.
Physical Demands

Employee is required to talk or hear regularly; use hands for fine manipulation; walk or stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and occasionally climb or balance. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Vision must allow close focus. Emotional stability required to work effectively under pressure.

Work Environment

Noise levels are usually low to moderate. Employees may be exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and subject to temperature fluctuations, fumes, odors, and dust.
