Job Description

Job Summary: The Special Education Aide works as a team member in providing a quality educational program for scholars with disabilities.

Essential Job Functions
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of behavioral management and academic transition strategies.
  • Actively participate in building activities, meetings, conferences, IEPs, swimming or pool activities, lunch, community-based instruction, and other activities as assigned.
  • Present lessons, assist in instruction, and prepare materials under the direction of a certified teacher.
  • Assist with transportation loading/unloading of buses and city transportation.
  • Transport small groups of scholars to activities when necessary.
  • Inform the certified teacher of any specific needs or concerns regarding scholars.
  • Follow suggestions from related service providers as directed.
  • Assist in implementing a community-based functional instructional program.
  • Assist with the medical, adaptive daily living, and self-care needs of scholars (e.g., eating, hygiene, toileting, diapering).
  • Lift and transfer scholars as needed.
  • Assist in preparing scholars for pool activities and support them under WSI supervision.
  • Assist in behavioral, academic, and vocational interventions as needed.
  • Perform record-keeping and organizational tasks (attendance, food service records, behavior plan charting, Medicaid billing, etc.).
  • Interact with co-workers, administration, scholars, parents, and community in a professional supportive manner.
  • Serve as a positive role model.
  • Assist in arranging and managing the physical setting to facilitate learning.
  • Supervise school day activities (before and after school, lunch, recess, bus loading/unloading) to ensure safety.
  • Demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required education and experience:

  • Completed a minimum of 60 college credits earned
  • Obtained an associate’s or higher degree
  • Obtained a passing score on an MDE approved ETS Paraprofessional assessment

Preferred qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Safely and appropriately restrain scholars when necessary according to approved protocols
  • Enter and participate in swimming and/or pool activities with students
  • Provide supervision during field trips, activities, and while transporting students
  • Physically push wheelchairs and assist with lifting and transferring students
  • Supervise scholars to ensure a safe environment
  • Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Work well with others
  • Deal with parents, public, and staff members in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Handle confidential information
  • Work in a diverse environment
