Chicago Public Schools seeks a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support instructional efforts under a Special Education teacher's supervision. You will assist students with various disabilities in accordance with IEPs and written instructions.
You will perform tasks including one-on-one tutoring, personal care in line with safety requirements, and documentation of student behavior; travel with students for activities as needed.
Position identifies core duties and responsibilities under the supervision of a Special Education teacher holding a valid teaching certificate. This role assists in the instruction of disabled students, performs related duties, and follows IEPs and written instructions.
Under the general direction of the school principal and immediate supervision of a Special Education teacher, the assistant helps reinforce teaching efforts with children with various disabilities, including physical, visual, hearing, learning, behavioral, emotional, and mental impairments.
Assists Special Education teachers in elementary and high schools, reinforcing efforts in accordance with each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
Lifts and positions non‑ambulatory students, provides one‑on‑one tutoring, personal hygiene services, and assists with orthopedic aids.
Supports daily living skills, accompanies students to swimming pools, clinics, and field trips, and maintains written records of student behavior.
Corrects homework and examination materials, takes notes, and attends workshops and training sessions.
May employ aggressive management techniques to restrain violent students, administer CPR as directed, operate audio‑visual and photocopying equipment.
