Job summary

St. Joseph County, IN is seeking a Special Deputy to provide security for interior and exterior areas of courthouses, Juvenile Justice Center, and county service buildings, including locations in South Bend and Mishawaka. The role is full-time with hours Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, must be at least 21, and must have no felony convictions. A background check, interview, CVSA, drug screening, and 40-hour pre-basic training are

Qualifications

• Good standing with the BMV; no felony convictions.
• Background investigations, personal interview, CVSA, drug screening, and 40‑hour pre‑basic are required.

Responsibilities

• Provide security for interior and exterior of courthouses, courtrooms, Juvenile Justice Center and county service buildings.
• Screen employees and the public at county courthouses.
• Maintain courtroom security during trials and protect judges, staff, and the public.
• Transport inmates back to jail in coordination with jail staff.
• Take and complete reports as directed by supervisors.
• Escort jurors to their vehicles after trials.
• Conduct routine interior/exterior patrols of courthouse facilities.
• Pat down arrestees for weapons and contraband and complete booking paperwork.

Job Position: Special Deputy

Status: Full-time

Salary: $40,107

Hours: Monday – Friday 0730 – 1600

Job Summary:

• Security for interior/exterior of the courthouses, courtrooms, Juvenile Justice Center, and County Services Buildings.

Key Responsibilities:

• Security for interior/exterior of the courthouses, county service buildings, and Juvenile Justice Center. These locations include South Bend and Mishawaka placement.
• Employee and Public screening areas for all County Courthouses.
• Courtroom security, including trials.
• Safety of the Judges, staff, and the public.
• Responsible for transporting inmates back to the jail when needed with coordination with jail staff.
• Work assigned areas as directed by your supervisors.
• Take reports and complete reports when necessary or when asked by a supervisor.
• Escort Jury’s to their vehicles after a trial concludes.
• Routine interior/exterior patrols of the courthouse.
• Pat down all new arrest for weapons and contraband and fill out booking paperwork.
• Escort new arrest from the courthouse to the jail.
• Deescalate any problems that may occur with the public within the courthouse.

Qualification:

• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Must have a high school diploma or GED
• Must be in good standings with the BMV
• No felony convictions
• Must successfully complete:
  • Background investigations
  • Personal Interview
  • CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analysis)
  • Drug Screening
  • 40 hour pre-basic
• Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
• Past law enforcement experience preferred
