Chef Assistant / Sous Chef

NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) seeks a Chef Assistant/Sous Chef to support the Chef Instructor in culinary consumer‑based classes and camps. The candidate will assist with cooking and baking activities, supervise children, and maintain a safe kitchen environment.

Essential Duties

• Support Chef Instructor by setting up equipment and mise en place for daily cooking/baking activities.
• Monitor campers to ensure compliance with camp rules and safety.
• Check ingredient cart, note missing items, and assist with ingredient preparation.
• Assist with or lead cooking or baking demonstrations with oversight from Chef Instructor as needed.
• Ensure proper food safety practices.
• Help campers with recipes and plating for lunch or snack.
• Assist with cleaning tasks as required.
• Perform additional duties as necessary to support department and college goals.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Culinary arts or baking experience or schooling.
• Experience working with children.
• Understanding of food safety.

Preferred Qualifications

• Food safety certification (helpful but not required).

• Confidence in the kitchen or bakeshop.
• Upbeat, responsible, and positive attitude.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• High level of responsibility and accountability.
• Ability to pass a background check and provide proof of immunizations.

Physical Demands

Employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, push or pull items such as kitchen carts, climb a step stool or ladder, stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach overhead, and frequently stand and walk.

Compensation

$14.00 hourly.
