Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Sonographer or Senior Sonographer to perform advanced ultrasound procedures across multiple specialty areas, working under limited supervision with state-of-the-art imaging technology.

The role includes educating patients, monitoring patient well-being during exams, and serving as a resource for students and staff by providing instruction on ultrasound techniques and equipment operation.

Qualifications

• Completion of a CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology.
• Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program plus a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography OR.
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.

Responsibilities

• Performs complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
• Provides instruction to trainees, students and medical staff on operation and safety precautions.
• Consults with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
• Documents exam information as required by departmental standards.
• Evaluates images of ultrasound exams and determines diagnostic quality.
• Assists with and provides ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
• Provides information and instructions to patients and families regarding procedures.
• Performs patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and basic life support; administers contrast material when needed.
• Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
• Instructs and evaluates sonography students and residents on diagnostic equipment operation.
• Maintains quality control with the ultrasound section per departmental standards.
• Determines equipment malfunctions and contacts repair service.

Position Summary

Position Responsibilities

• Performs complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler

• Documents exam information as required by departmental standards
• Evaluates images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality
• Assists with and provide ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures
• Provides information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures
• Performs patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepare and administer contrast material to patients
• Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public
• Instructs and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment
• Instructs medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment
• Maintains quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards
• Determines equipment malfunctions and contact repair service
• Performs equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation

Education Requirements

Consideration for the Sonographer position requires one the following:

• Completion of a CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology or
• Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography or
• Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography

Consideration for the Senior Sonographer position requires the following:

• A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography or vascular sonographyExperience providing clinical education to students, sonographers, and residents.

Experience Requirements

• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

Certification Requirements

• Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment. Requires registration in Abdomen.

Desirable Qualifications

• Registration in Vascular and OB/GYN specialty areas
