Job summary

UAB Medicine's Radiology team in Trussville seeks a PRN Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to perform ultrasound exams, adjust and operate equipment, and ensure high-quality imaging for interpretation. The role requires adherence to safety standards and collaboration across fast-paced clinical settings.

The ideal candidate holds RDMS or ARRT with advanced certification in Sonography and is trained in PACS documentation, with BLS eligibility within 30 days of hire.

Qualifications

• RDMS or ARRT with Advanced certification in Sonography (within 12 months of hire)
• If IDTF, must have RDMS or ARRT with Advanced in Sonography (R.T.(S))
• BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association within 30 days of hire date
• High school diploma or equivalent with 2 years' experience, or Associate's degree or technical degree

Responsibilities

• Performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations and provides quality images for interpretation.
• Sets up and adjusts equipment and manually maneuvers transducers.
• Implements safety standards and conducts quality control procedures.
• Performs routine and complex studies and assists in various imaging procedures.
• Recognizes significant structures, artifacts, pathology and equipment limitations.
• Ensures equipment functions properly and reports malfunctions.
• Submits high-quality images and patient data to PACS.
• Maintains department cleanliness and regulatory compliance

Job Description

Performs diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasound waves to examine tissue and body structure, providing quality images for interpretation.

• Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers transducers to perform exams.
• Implements safety standards and performs appropriate quality control procedures.
• Performs routine and complex studies and assists in a variety of imaging procedures.
• Recognizes significant structures, artifacts, pathology and equipment limitations.
• Ensures equipment is properly functioning. Reports potential problems or equipment malfunction to appropriate personnel. Lock/tag out equipment if appropriate.
• Ensures prompt submission of high-quality of all images and documents sent to PACS (image quality, correct lead markers and patient data/history).
• Assists in maintaining a clean, and orderly department to include procedure rooms, storage areas, dressing rooms, film storage area and any other areas in department.
• Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies.

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• Registered as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) OR
• Registered as a Registered Technologist (R.T.) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with Advanced certification in Sonography (R.T.(S
• If at an Independent Diagnostic Testing Facility (IDTF) must have one of the following upon hire:
• Registered as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) OR
• Registered as a Registered Technologist (R.T.) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with Advanced certification in Sonography (R.T.(S
• BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent with 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree, or Technical degree required.
