Job summary

Xtreme Sonar is building the acoustic perception layer for ocean sensing. We seek a hands-on Sonar Technician to turn designs into working prototype hardware, collaborating with electrical and mechanical engineers in an early-stage startup.

You will build prototype hardware, perform PCB assembly, wind coils, wire harnesses, and support field tests at sea. Strong attention to detail and comfort with lab, dockside, and outdoor environments are essential.

Qualifications

• Technical certification or equivalent hands-on electronics experience.
• Proven soldering, PCB assembly, and fine-pitch prototyping.
• Experience winding coils or building custom electromagnetic components.
• Ability to read schematics and translate them into prototypes.
• Comfort with mechanical assembly and basic hand tools.

Responsibilities

• Build prototype hardware from engineering designs, schematics, and specs.
• Place components, solder, and assemble PCBs.
• Wind inductors and build custom electromagnetic or acoustic components.
• Assemble wiring harnesses and interconnects for prototypes and tests.
• Support mechanical assembly and integration, including fittings and sealing.
• Set up test equipment like oscilloscopes and data loggers.
• Support tank, bench, and field testing of sensors and systems.
• Troubleshoot and rework prototype hardware with engineers.
• Maintain lab space and tools, keep equipment organized.
• Document build processes and test results clearly.
• Support field deployments and sea trials prep.
• Prepare materials and fixtures ahead of builds/tests.
• Assist inventory tracking and parts ordering as needed.

About this Role/Job Summary

Xtreme Sonar is seeking a Sonar Technician to build the prototype hardware behind our next generation underwater sensing systems. You'll work closely with our electrical and mechanical engineers, turning designs and schematics into physical, working prototypes through precise, hands‑on assembly and fabrication.

This is a hands‑on role at an early stage startup, where you'll be responsible for building the prototype hardware our engineers design. We're looking for someone skilled and detail oriented, comfortable with fine electronics assembly work, and ready to take ownership of builds from start to finish.

What You’ll Do

• Build prototype hardware from engineering designs, schematics, and specifications


• Perform component placement, soldering, and assembly on PCBs


• Wind coil inductors and build custom electromagnetic or acoustic components as needed


• Build wiring harnesses, cable assemblies, and interconnects for prototype and test systems


• Support mechanical assembly and integration, including fitting, fastening, sealing, and housing components


• Set up and run test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, data loggers, and acoustic test gear


• Support tank, bench, and field testing of acoustic sensors and sonar systems


• Troubleshoot and rework prototype hardware alongside electrical and mechanical engineers


• Maintain lab space, tools, and equipment, keeping everything organized and ready for use


• Document build processes, test setups, and results clearly and consistently


• Support field deployments and sea trials, including equipment prep, transport, and on site assistance


• Help prepare materials, parts, and fixtures ahead of scheduled builds or tests


• Support inventory tracking and ordering of parts, tools, and consumables as needed

What We’re Looking For

• Technical certification, or equivalent hands‑on experience in electronics assembly, electromechanical fabrication, or a related field


• Proven experience with soldering, component placement, and PCB assembly, ideally at a fine pitch or prototype level


• Experience winding coils or building custom electromagnetic components


• Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembly drawings, and build prototypes directly from them


• Comfortable working with mechanical assembly, including fasteners, seals, and basic hand and power tools


• Strong attention to detail and steady hands for precision assembly work


• Good communication skills, with the ability to document work clearly for engineers to review


• Willingness to work in lab, dockside, and outdoor or field environments

Nice to Haves

• Experience building or assembling transducers, hydrophones, or other acoustic components


• Familiarity with marine, underwater, or defense related equipment


• Exposure to sonar, acoustics, or sensor based systems


• Experience with hand or CNC machining, 3D printing, or fabrication


• Experience supporting field testing or sea trials


• Familiarity with basic data logging or test software


• IPC certification or formal training in soldering and electronics assembly standards
