Job summary

City of Hastings in Hastings, NE is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate a variety of heavy equipment at the landfill, perform upkeep and construction tasks, and help ensure proper disposal practices. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience with heavy equipment or landfill operations.

A CDL is required to be obtained and maintained. This full-time position offers a daytime schedule with safety-driven duties and opportunities

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of experience operating medium and heavy equipment or trucks OR landfill operation experience.

Responsibilities

• Disposes of solid waste materials at landfill site by operating several types of heavy equipment, excavating landfill site, shredding waste, transporting solid waste materials, and spreading and compacting layers of waste and earth cover to proper grade.
• Performs operation, maintenance and construction activities associated with solid waste disposal. Opens and closes landfill site.
• Directs incoming vehicles to unloading area and oversees unloading of waste. Examines cargo to prohibit disposal of caustic waste, according to government regulations. Communicates safety rules to customers and answers questions regarding disposal or closure operations.
• Plans location of cut and fill areas and unloading locations for ease of unloading and to permit efficient covering of unloaded materials.
• Compiles and maintains accurate records regarding assigned work and completes reports for a variety of agencies.
• Performs preventative maintenance by greasing equipment; cleaning filters; checking all fluids; inspecting undercarriage; tracking inspections; and cleaning tracks. Performs a variety of routine repair and maintenance tasks on equipment and tools such as washing, lubricating, and adjusting. Refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor. Completes maintenance records and reports.

HOURS

40 to 45 hours per week.
Hours are Monday - Friday during the day and every other Saturday morning, and some holidays.
