Job summary

Rise Social in Odessa, Texas is seeking an entry level position in the Government Administration sector to operate heavy equipment for the Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department. Overview

Summary: Under basic supervision, operates specialized trucks and heavy motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions at Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures.

Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operates a variety of machinery to move and transfer solid waste, refuse, and discarded materials; operates specialized vehicles for collection and emptying of trash containers.
  • Maintains and cleans equipment and reports mechanical defects and vehicle maintenance needs.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
  • Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • 2 year's work experience operating heavy equipment, preferably with the City of Odessa OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and capabilities of heavy power-driven equipment.
  • Safety policies and standards, and safe driving practices in public streets.
  • Skill in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, vehicle inspection procedures, and making minor adjustments to operating controls.
  • Following standard operating and safety procedures and verbal and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
License And Certification Requirements

Texas State Commercial Driver's License Class B is required. Special vehicle training and licensing may be required.

Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and at City facilities; requires constant physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
